Just a few simple questions.

Who here has been a part of any organized football team at any level, i.e. High School, College, Semi-Pro or Pro? And did that time consist of being in the locker room just before, during or immediately after a game?

ETA- With the exception of the ACL comment, was the majority of what GW said any worse than what you used to hear from your Coaches?

High School.

And no, I was never told to take out an ACL or hit opposing player's heads or ankles.

2 years in high school and I'm not sure I'm reading the 2nd question right but yes we were in the locker room before, at halftime, and after the game.

ETA: now that I realize where you're going with this I will say yes I've heard similar speeches to the one Williams gave. I still play rugby and we've talked about things like this but never to an extent even close to that. I've also never had a coach order anyone to go directly for another players ACL. That crosses the line

I love these little, "who has been on a team" threads. I bet it makes you feel cool, doesn't it?

You don't tell anyone to take out an acl.

I have been defensive of the saints the whole time, but damn that is bad.

high school and played last year in a full contact alumni game, we were always told to do our best and leave it on the field, never told to intentionally hurt someone by the coaches

To go along with your question; I have played high school, college and Arena and I have never been told to go after a person who had a concussion or take out an ACL. Of course I played offense so maybe that's why but seriously this went a little far. Actually he went too far. I have heard things like, "the DE or OLB hurt his ankle last game so we will run it to his side and test him", but I never heard a coach tell our lineman to go after his leg. Or if I was matchup with a DB that was injured we'd test him on a few quick routes but that's it. Now I have heard coaches say let's go out there and hurt someone but we didn't take it as "let's INJURE someone". This is just kind of crazy. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

Yea I didn't mind any of that. What pisssed me off was when he talked about cheap shots. Hell I guarantee the 49ers DC was saying similar things (excluding the ACL comment) before that game

I played football my entire childhood until I graduated Highschool. I played for a class 4A team that was always in contention for the state finals, and I can guarantee you that 90% of football players have heard similar speeches. With the exception of the ACL comment, because most coaches really don't want to hurt players.

From the ages of 7-18 I played organnized football. In high school, we were losing a game once at halftime. Our defensive coordinator picked up a trash can and started throwing everything in it at us and told us this what we loooked like in the first half. He told us to go out there and rip of the other teams head and shite down their neck. Now, it was just a figure of speech and we were in fact playing like shite against a team who we had no business losing to at the time, that was the only time where I saw one of our coaches flip out like that. Usually, they could make their point loud and clear without getting all emotional like that. I can never recall a coach telling me or any other player to intentionally hurt the opponent. Its football, you don't have to tell someone to do that. Its a given you go out there and play within the context of the game as hard as you can. Injuries are gonna come no matter what.

as a high school coach (former player too), I can tell you our team always try to get there best shots off on the opposing team's best players - if they don't have that fire, they are on the damn bench with a clip board.

You hit a running back with blows 20-30 times a game, attempt to get all 11 on him during a pile, it takes its toll. But the opposing D is doing the same to us.

also, his locker room talk is a little over the top with the f-bombs, but that is Gregg. Meeting him in person, he speaks the same way outside the locker room.

This is what I said in another thread:

quote:

I'm willing to bet those kind of speeches happen every weekend, before every game, in the NFL...in college...in high school...in pee wee football. Guys try to hurt someone at every level of football on every play. I love how all the coaches, players, and pundits that say stuff like "you gotta smack 'em in the mouth, and dominate the other guy!" What does that imply exactly?

The only thing I have a problem with is when Williams talked about that guy's ACL.

I played high school football and my D. coordinator would say stuff like this all the time. Not specifically go hit this kids ACL, but stuff like, "I want you to fricking knock his head off, make him scared to come back and play the next play." Also if you continually played like a puss you were going to have a seat on the bench. Things like that. Once you get into someones head you win.
