What kind of pet/pets?
Break down food, vet bills, toys, boarding, etc.
I keep reading articles about how Americans are spending more than ever on pets but I've never seen it discussed on this board.

Please don't give an instant guesstimate. Take a moment to add stuff up and then post.

I don't have time to add that up. Around $1,000 a year.

This is probably a better question for the OT.

Normal vet visit and shots probably about $100

We don't buy expensive food and only buy about 1 bag per month ($10 maybe?)

Flea medication is like $15 or $20 per month.

Less than 1K for sure.

$0

I would love a dog, but don't have one because it doesn't make any sense right now. When people with fancy pants dogs complain about money, I rarely feel any pity.

2 Dogs...
Vet and shots... 120 each x 2 = 240
Food... 15 a bag x 3 bags a month x 12 months = 540
Boarding... none
Flea/Heart worm pills .. 130 x 4 packs a year = 520
Toys .. wife buys them on impulse = 50

So, I'm at 1,370. But the pills are what bother me. I tried to order them online but they need your vet's prescription. Vet won't give it to me. And I've tried more than one vet.

So you can't afford a dog? There are lots of poor folks with dogs.

Heartworm medicine ($8-$9 a month) $100/year
Food ($65 every 5 weeks or so) - $700/year
Routine Checkups(twice a year if nothing is wrong) - $120/year
Treats (about a bag a week)- $150/year
Toys (2-3 frisbees) - $60/year
Misc (shampoo, etc.) - $80/year
Boarding - Free
Trips to the park (gas) - $120/year

= $1330/year give or take a little.

What follows is what I have on Mint.com. I do carry most of the expenses for our dog, but my g/f has bought things for the pet. A few snacks here or there or maybe a bag of dog food. I usually pay all of the vet bills.

1 small dog.

From Jan 2011 - Dec 11 I spent ~$501.28

Vet - $239.44 ( seems like I spend about $100 every 4-5 months because I did drop another 120 Jan '12)
- includes vet visits for immunizations, annual check-up, his flea/heartworm meds (~$100 per 6 months).

Pet-Food and Misc.- ~$206.41
We buy him a decent cost dog food. But since he's a small dog it last a few months. Then lumped into this category is misc spending on treats, toys, items etc.

Grooming - $55.43
Haircut and bath and stuff.

The biggest expenses come in the first few months. Multiple vet visits, rabies shot, and all the crap you end up buying the dog.

There is a big difference between can't afford and would rather save.

Also, I work long hours and having a puppy alone for 12+ hours at a time is not going to make a good, loyal dog.

ETA: I hate Autocorrect and that post had nothing to do with a guy named Kevin.

That's 1/2 of what I pay, assuming you just have one dog. It's 1/5 of what I pay if you have 2 like me.
How is this done?

Could be using a generic like Iverhart.

I pay about $10-$12 per dog because one of them had whipworms once, which means those bastages are permanently in the yard, so they need Interceptor.

I don't really feel like adding up for each break down, but I spend about 1200-1500 a year.

Grooming is probably the biggest cost. She is a 12 pound mini schnauzer so food is fairly cheap. Schnauzers require haircuts every 5-6 weeks before they start to look homeless.

I've never had a dog that needed grooming. I have to comb out my Golden Retriever once a week and he hates it.

I'm way over the numbers quoted here. We have two Giant Schauzers and they get groomed every 4 weeks at $190 total each visit.

Plus all the other stuff people have listed.

So, I'm at $2500 for grooming a year plus everything else everone has listed.

Gotta ask you about G.S.
I had a friend who bought one and the guy came to work every Monday with cuts all over his arms from the dog playing with him. He said they've got sharp teeth and they don't know their own strength. Sound familiar?

Very strong and energetic dogs. I've never gotten cut from one of mine but I tend to keep my hands away from their mouths. I wouldn't say their teeth are any sharper than any other breed once they've grown out of their puppy stage and matured.

They are great dogs. Our female is fearless and will swim in our pool for hours. As long as we are throwing a toy in the pool she is fetching it.

Both of ours are rescues and have some issues but I wouldn't trade them for any other dog.

I think that is just the breed, everyone I know that has owned one has had health issues that ended up costing them big.
