Try Kurt Unkel's Cajun Grain.. The grits are the best I've had.. no butter required.

Might try a bag of this too. Used to be known as "Popcorn" rice, now called Gourmet Rice.

Good stuff.

You guys really like Louisiana

I prefer Louisiana food products for more than local economic reasons, we just know and care more about food here than almost anywhere else, it's just probably better.

Silicone Valley is where you go for technology, Alabama for red dirt and morons, Louisiana for food products.

Like Jasmine very much. But, Basmati is my regular go-to rice. Need to make Arroz Con Pollo soon. Also love saffron rice under some Cuban Frijoles Negro.

But jasmine and basmati rice?

I don't know about all of that. Some of these villages in Thailand and India completely depend on rice for their very survival

Hard to imagine we're putting more care into it than them

I usually buy jasmine, but since I like to do a little Indian cooking, I usually have some basmati on hand, just for authenticity sake. The Cajun jasmine at Fresh Pickin's is my favorite.

I'm sorry there are starving villages in Thailand, but adding unnecessary transportation costs to food products does not seem like a good strategy to alleviate world hunger. They ship us their food and we ship them our food?

That is what I buy too Choc. They sell it at the produce stands here in BR. I prefer it over the jasmine.
Didn't know they changed the name from popcorn to gourmet though.

That's Kurt Unkel's rice. He has a cool website and he's a proponent of sustainable agriculture.. An unpretentious guy.. farm boy from Kinder but he's in the mix when it comes to organic farming and free range livestock.

I'm not talking about buying it out of empathy

I just think that the statement that we put more care into those products is pretty asinine when you consider that these people have been doing it for thousands of years for survival.

I just don't believe that some cajun dude can make better Basmati Rice than some Indians or Pakistanis

Lol wut? Anyway if you see any of these local products, give them a try, it may surprise you. Here in SWLA its rice country so buying foreign rice is kinda like living in Detroit and driving a Nissan. I also think some small farms like Unkel and Hoppe have found a nice niche with their products and supporting local growers will only help them further promote varieties that are gaining popularity.

Didn't say that

Perhaps those grains of rice grow better in certain soils

IDK, I just don't know why you wouldn't just buy the real shite

I don't know if anyone has ever tried to grow the stuff in Louisiana. I've tried that Texmati stuff (presumably grown in Texas) before, and I find it's not bad, but not quite as good as the imported variety of Basmati.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with care, though. The imported kind I've gotten seems to have a longer grain, which is what I like. I think it's also a bit more fragrant.

Pet peeve of mine but it's Silicon valley, not silicone valley

Silicon is a metal used to make semiconductors

Silicone is an industry term for a synthetic compound
