It's available in stores today if you want to pick it up.
****CAUTION: Spoilers past the first book start appearing in this thread on the next page. Ye have been warned.****

READ. THE. BOOKS.
I have the first four books on my kindle. Have only read the first one though because I don't want any spoilers for season two.
I have heard before though that the end of season three will piss people off more than anything that happened in season 1.
ETA: Oh, and that trailer had me mesmerized at my desk.

I didn't read the first book until the first season was over. I was told it was very true to the book, you just got more of the back story, which was true. I just decided I don't want any spoilers for season 2 of the TV series. Wanna enjoy it as it happens.

I guess that makes sense, but I don't see how you can not read the book after reading the first one. I'd be too anxious. To me, I'd rather be spoiled while sitting through a television show that takes 0 effort to finish instead of spoiling a book that requires me to read 900 or so pages.
Also, saying that reading the book gives just more backstory is a bit of an undersell. Reading the books makes everyone's motives clearer, the culture clearer, and basically creates a world that the show just can't replicate.

It's going to be the revelation of Jon's father that will tie into it.

Well, the thing is, I didn't read the first book until recently, and I knew I could hold out till the second season starts.
Not sure I'll be able to hold out after season two, knowing it will be a year before I get another season.

So you plan on reading the book AFTER the series?
Missing out...

I highly suggest reading the books first.
While I think the TV series is incredible, possibly the best book -> tv series ever created (staying as close to the book as possible), it obviously doesn't cover all the information (emotions, thoughts, etc) that the book conveys.

Okay, apparently not explaining this well. I will read the other books once this season is over. I just don't think that I'll finish book two before April 1st, so gonna hold off on that one.

Sometimes I like to see the first part of something on tv first to help put faces on the characters instead of just imagining what you think they look like.

That is what GRRM is so great at that. His imagery is better than any other book I can think of

You are better off holding off on the series....
Seriously.
I don't see how they can really give Storm of Swords justice in 10 hours.
At least all books after this one will be split over multiple seasons....

This. I can remember reading GoT the first time and the couple of chapters of the jousting tourney on Joffrey's nameday. shite was so descriptive I felt like I was there.

SoS will be two seasons and the first one will probably end at codeword (I don't think it's spoiler but if you don't wanna know it)

Yo Gunner, why is Joffrey getting off from beating the beautiful Sansa. I want to fricking kill him. He is truly the most despicable character I have ever seen. Like ever.
