frick...But if Drew really is asking for 23 million a year (for the first 3 years), I can understand it. That's a lot of money.

Probably wasn't going to be able to keep all three anyway with Drew needing 24 mil a year.

Wow. If you can't take care of Drew fricking Brees then something is wrong.

ETA: Not "internally", I just mean you should give Drew Brees whatever he wants. He deserves it. The principal behind the franchise tag isn't good. We needed to give him a nice, juicy contract. This is ridiculous.

Wow. Either the front office screwed the pooch on this one or they have some genius plan in the works that no one else can see

The "exclusive-rights" tag means Brees cannot talk with other teams, and also guarantees roughly $1-2 million more than the standard franchise tag. The Saints' continued inability to sign Brees to a long-term deal means premier free agent LG Carl Nicks will now almost certainly walk in free agency, while Marques Colston likely won't be far behind. The Saints still have until July 16 to work out a long-term accord with their record-breaking quarterback, but recent reports have pegged the two sides as much as $5 million a year apart. With talks moving at a snail's pace since last August, there's little reason to believe a breakthrough is on the horizon. Mar 3 - 3:39 PM

WWL radio just reported it.

So, do we wave goodbye to Nicks now?

Unless the NFLPA can get the cap raised, a contract like that could cripple the team cap-wise.

Most likely. Colston too. Just give Brees what he wants. Good god, he's the best thing to happen to our franchise in a long time, possibly ever
