Golf swing question

The biggest difference I see watching top professionals on TV and watching good amateur players IRL is back swing on drives.
Pros take a much faster back swing. Why? I've played with amateurs who take a much slower back swing and consistently hit 275-300 yards off the tee.
If a fast back swing does not increase distance, does it increase accuracy?

Taking the club back or down?

I think it's more about rhythm and consistency hitting on the button every time, not necessarily whether they take it back fast or slow. Furyk has a jacked up back swing that is not fast.

Also, most pros are playing with a driver that has 9 degrees of loft or less...

Pros swings are so engrained in their minds that they don't need to slow it down usually. A drive is the one shot in golf where you always have a perfect lie, all they have to do is get up there, pick there target and swing. I know they fade/draw, or lay up sometimes but the swing to them is just second nature. If you think you have put in a lot of time on the range and on the course, imagine how much a pro has put in

Hmmm, I'm going to watch that next time I see him play.
BTW, it looks to me that Bubba Watson ends up on his toes after a drive more than other golfers. Do you see that? What's the advantage there?

Bubba goes way past parallel at the top of his swing. That's typical when someone is swinging that far around and that fast.

Don't go looking to replcate Bubba's swing. Not many people can do that.

I think if most people tried to swing like Bubba they would fall over, I have no idea how he keeps his swing so long and so fast, its's incredible.
I watched him in person once and his drives are like 10 ft of the ground for 50 yards, then they just take off, he hit one like 330 into a 30mph wind or something that day, incredible

I saw him NOLA last year, and it was incredible watching his tee shots. I don't get super impressed by the PGA Tour players anymore because I've been going to the NOLA tournament for so many years now, but Bubba was amazing. And not just off the tee. I saw him hit 75 yard wedges with 15 yards of draw on them. Really incredible.

he's one of my favorite golfers, he got into the PGA without a swing coach, and his camo khakis are awesome

I have been working a lot on my golf game the last month. Recently I bought the Tour Tempo app. Yeah it's 14.99, but it's made a HUGE difference in my game. Premise is every great golfer swings at a 3/1 ratio of backswing to downswing. The app comes with 3 speeds 27/9, 24/8, and 21/7. 27/9 was just too slow for me. I'm on 24/8 now and I think soon I'll be swinging at 21/7.
The way it works is simple. Put earbuds in and select the speed you want. The app plays three tones. The first is to start your swing. The second is to start your downswing. The third is impact with the ball. It doesnt take long at all to really see a difference. I've become inifinitely more consistent with both driver and irons. Really excited and having fun at the course now.

One of the reasons amateurs are told to slow down the backswing is that their swing is not 'grooved.' The faster the tempo for an amateur, 'getting too quick,' results in either a hook or a draw depending on whether you come over the top, or slide the hips through leaving the club face open.
That sounds like a cool app for establishing a good tempo.

A slow and deliberate backswing is a "hackish" thing to do. Most pros would not be caught dead doing this. They may when working on something on the range. For most people taking it back slowly keeps us under control. A pro is under control so taking it back that slowly will only cause problems. Don't want any thoughts going through their head during a swing probably. Just set their angles and fire away.

Actually most pro's work on slowing down the swing and syncing up the body and arms. You start losing directional control and distance when you don't control that relationship.

Yes but I think the OP was talking about a VERY slow and deliberate backswing. Like 2-3 seconds.

Swing Plan is the key. The first 8-10 inched on your back swing will set up the rest of your swing.

This is an every shot thing for Bubba. No one moves the ball like he does. He has said he developed it from practicing in his front yard. His yard had a huge tree right in the middle of it, and he would draw the green in his dirt driveway. He played with wiffle balls, and in order to get them on the green, he had to learn how to shape the ball.
He swing is definitely not one you want to try to replicate. He is the only one in golf that literally requires having a shaft that is about 90% graphite and 10% steel to keep the clubhead somewhat steady through all that torque.
