Can someone tell me about Spags...

Defensive philosophy? What scheme does he run and will it fit with our secondary and defensive players we have?

He likes to be solid in the front seven. good athletic pass rushers like Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyora (he coached both) and great linebackers.
He was the D-Cord for the Giants super bowl a few years back. All around a great hire.

He runs a 4-3 and is an aggressive d-cord, but he doesn't blitz as much as GW. You want see as much mixed defensive packages (3-4, 3-3-5, etc.) but he likes to rotate his defensive lineman.
I can either see Will Smith flourishing in his defensive package or him being shipped off - depending on how good Spags thinks he can be. Will he be worth his contract? I think not. But i do love the guy.

All we really need is a coach who can hold teams under 30. Not that tough a task.

Yasinskas had a fair take-
If you want a picture of a Spagnuolo defense, don’t think too much about the St. Louis team he had been the head coach of since 2009.
Think more of the New York Giants, when Spagnoulo was their defensive coordinator in 2007 and ’08. The Giants won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season. Prior to that, Spagnoulo had a long run as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, who played in four NFC Championship Games during his tenure. Spagnuolo worked for the Eagles from 1999 through 2006.
In short, his defense -- in theory -- is a lot like we’ve seen out of the Giants this postseason. It relies on a lot of pressure from the front four and not much blitzing. Spagnuolo prefers tall/angular cornerbacks that can play man-to-man coverage and also likes playmakers at safety.
Williams relied much more on the blitz than Spagnuolo typically has and the change in coordinators likely means there will be some changes in the defensive personnel.
Cornerbacks Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson probably can fit the Spagnuolo profile, but Tracy Porter, who can be a free agent, might not. Free safety Malcolm Jenkins has the potential to be a playmaker, but strong safety Roman Harper, who blitzed a lot under Williams, might not be a great fit because he’s not particularly strong in coverage.
Up front, the Saints will have to generate more of a pass rush. Will Smith is the team’s top defensive end, but he’ll turn 31 in July and is not coming off a good season. The Saints may look at Smith’s high cap figure and realize they can free up $6 million by cutting him. Cameron Jordan was a first-round pick in 2011 and showed he can play the run, but isn’t yet a prolific pass rusher. Defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis can generate some push in the middle, but the Saints likely will have to add at least one strong pass rusher on the front four.
There also could be change at linebacker, but that probably was coming no matter what. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma showed some signs of age last season and outside linebacker Scott Shanle turned 32 in November.
There’s some work to be done on the personnel front. But the Saints got the man they wanted to direct their defense.

Thanks. Just getting to know the new blood. I am excited. Hopefully we can dominate beyond belief next year!

This is the guy I wanted all along. I gained a lot of respect him from his time in STL. I used to listen to his weekly spot on Movin' the Chains in the afternoons with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan and always had a like for the guy. I'm really excited about it.

He likes playmakers at safety, huh?
Need help at that position.

I think spags definitely has his work cut out for him. Our personnel is in shambles right now and seems to be the opposite of what a spag defense looks like. Our defensive line is geared as run stoppers, and our lb's are average at best. i could see casillas fitting the mold if he could stay healthy. jo lonn is alright as well. Vilma might have another year of averageness in the tank. Martezilla is a big x-factor here. His play will determine alot imo.
Cameron Jordan has potential to be very good in this defense as a guy they can slide inside and outside alla tuck (Complete stretch I know, might get blasted for this). The problem is, the effectiveness of sliding guys inside like this depends greatly on edge rushers of which we have only a couple of prospects that probably won't set the world on fire. (Gal, Rom) I really just don't know how smith fits in here.
Our secondary is probably going to stay about the same if I had to guess. I think our secondary could be really good if we had a pass rush honestly. Jabari is the man, PR showed signs of being a solid starter, malcom jenkins kinda worried me a little this year (but a pas rush is definitely a FS best friend). I'm very interested to see how spagNOLA uses harper. The man will never be a cover guy, but he has value with his other toolsets. I don't think he is worth the redonkulous contract we gave him. (you can thank san diego for that one)
The good news is, maybe the man can evaluate defensive players a little better than the shitty defensive scouting of years recent.
The other bit of good news is that with our O, he doesn't have to have a top defense. All he has to do is keep teams under the 4 td mark.
Here's to getting some defensive gems in the draft this year and finding a way to keep colston and nicks. If these things happen, I like our chances next year. Brees is playing above a man and just under a god right now.
ETA: Really? the man likes tall angular corner backs that can play man and playmakers at safety? REALLY? Maddenism

our defensive ends were crashing down doing their job, but the problem was no rush up the middle which allowed them to step up and deliver the throw

quote:WTF was wrong with Sed this year? He had 6.5 sacks last year.... Plus Rogers played ok..... Franklin was a total bust.... Tom Johnson was a bright spot and shows promise however

I get what you are saying and I will add that I MISS hargrove. Dude did alot for us in 09' as far as pass rush up the middle.
Our dt's were mostly just asked to fill gaps this year. Sed Ellis had a huge regressive year aswell. Dude was looking solid couple years ago. I remember a time when in games at times he was one of the only people actually getting to the qb. Dude took a huge step back this year. Franklin is literally a huge blob that just sits in the middle. We knew this when we got him, and thats what he was. I wouldn't call him a bust. Rogers looked alright at moments, dude just doesn't have it anymore though.
I feel like there were so many times this year I was reaching for rogers to be good. I'd see him bullrush the frick outta someone and be getting excited only to see it was a screenplay. I swear everytime I noticed rogers, this was the case
I'm just interested to see what spags gets going here. He obviously saw something to accept this job over the many others he was probably offered. He must think he can do something with this d.
...or he just knows what kind of offense we have

Didn't he have 8 sacks or so in 2010?
I thought he was going to have a big year too.

sed ellis had 6 in '10 and 2 and '09
he also had 2 Forced fumbles in '10. He had a near probowl year last year. I was expecting more improvement, but instead he took a 180 degree turn and sprinted the other direction.

They have acknowledged and/or addressed their problems nearly every season. Injury issues at RB drafted Ingram, DT issues signed Rogers and Franklin(looked like good signings didn't work out), and drafted defense with our first pick 4 years in a row!
That's gotta be attractive to him, plus he knows with Payton and Brees he will make the playoffs every year.
