Gave it a try on Hulu Plus.... if you're one of its writers I'm sorry... you kinda suck.

Just watched the episode where Junior (whatever the hell his name is) unintentionally bounced a basketball off his dad's head into the hoop. So I'm to believe that dad wouldn't mind having his face smashed by a basketball over and over in order to recreate the shot. Wouldn't be so bad if the tone of the show was supposed to be over the top or zany, like Raising Hope, but we're supposed to find humor in somewhat credible people and situations. But they're NOT credible... they're contrived and gimmicky. Two gay guys with a little girl... you don't say! Old and fat Al Bundy with a hot Latina... gimme a break.

Give me Raising Hope... now THAT'S funny stuff.

You don't have to like the show, and there are many reasons not to, but the basketball situation is EXACTLY in line with the character of Phil Dunphy.

Oh he's a goofy bastard who is willing to do anything for his family...plus gets into pretty odd situations...I'd describe him as more of a Tim Taylor kind of dad, but with less manly qualities.

When I first saw the promos and watched a little I felt the same way, but I really like the show now. After watching a couple episodes you kind of forget how outlandish the whole setup is and just fall in love with the characters who are pretty funny. If for no other reason, Julie Bowen, Sophia Vergara, and Sarah Hyland provide some great eye candy.

Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy:

Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy:

Sophia Vergara as Gloria:

From the few episodes I've seen, its pretty hit or miss. Some episodes are hilarious, others sucked.

Yeah Modern Family is an acquired taste, I think. It might grow on you.

34 wins & 78 nominations? The writers can't suck too much.

Exactly. For such a shitty show it sure does win a lot of awards.

Sofia Vergara is enough reason to watch the show even if it does suck.

This seems to be your problem.
I've watched the show from the beginning and honestly think it is quite near the top of the best shows on television.
Thats just my opinion though.

ETA: screw it, it's the best show on TV

well there is your problem

Start with episode 1 and stick with it for a few more episodes.

catching bits and pieces here and there won't cut it. As with any show, it sorta helps when you understand each character

Nah...Parks and Rec is the best comedy on TV. Best show on TV is probably one of the FX shows like Justified or SOA or even AMC's The Walking Dead, Mad Men or Breaking Bad.

These days it's very hard for me to choose "the best" comedy. Modern Family, Parks and Rec, Community, Happy Endings. on a good day, 30 Rock is in there as well. Modern Family is certainly the most accessible comedy on my list, meaning I believe it appeals to more people.

you have to watch it from Episode 1

you get to know the characters in the first few episodes and they develop from there

its a great show if you put int he time to watch all the episodes

the quick one liners by Ed Oneil are great

Phil Dunphy reminds me of randy from Southpark on a much more family friendly scale

the dad always getting himself into ridiculous situations, but unlike randy, he gets into these situations because all he cares about is helping his family and making them happy

probably the most likable character on TV
