Huffington Post reports that LSU, Okie Lite, Oregon, Clemson, Wisconsin, and WVU will each get $22,300,000 for our bowl games. Gumps, Stanford, Michigan, and VT will each get $6,100,000.
Is this true? Why such a big difference?

The second choice from the same conference gets less money.

Second team in gets significantly less money. All money except about 2 million for expenses is split evenly amongst the conference teams and the conference. Means we will get about $6-$7 million by the time all the money is divided out between all members.

I thought you the sec splits it 13 ways and a team gets 2 portion of their payout.

looks like Michigan owes Sparty almost 3 million bucks... almost as bad as Okie Light's snub.

Not saying the figures are wrong but I am fairly certain they do not factor in money to the conference. Figures looks way inflated and are probably not in context.
Remember this is the Huffington Post. Extreme left wing publication and making a political statement as well as a sports one even in this article.
Same credibility as - say the ESPN Recruiting rankings.

I read a few years back that the bowl money earned by every team is split 14 ways, with 2 shares going to the team that earned it, 1 share going to every other team in the SEC and 1 share going to the SEC front offices. So, if the $22 million number is correct, LSU will get 2/14th of the $22 million (or $3.1 million), as well as 1/14th of Alabama's payout.

It is split 13 ways, but the 13th share goes to the SEC.

also, what are they basing that on? Other sites you look at has the BCS Championship game payout at 17 million, which is significantly lower than what this is saying just LSU gets. Are they counting money from somewhere other than just the bowl payout?

The SEC is a communist like system. Ole Miss gets almost as much as LSU (I think like 95% or more) and they're not even going to a bowl. I don't understand why the BCS system would pay so much less to the 2nd team in the conference. That sucks for the whole conference in a system like ours.

Very interesting. Mizzou and NC made 1.6 mil each in the Independence Bowl. That is $500,000 more than Boise St. made in the Gamblers Bowl. ULaLa made 1.1 millon less playing in NO.

What really matters is the total numbers for each conference:
Here are the numbers this is coming from. It looks closer to the other ones I have seen.
quote:
Conference.........total payout.........non-BCS bowl payout (per-school payout in parentheses)
SEC: ............... $42.895m (3.57m) .........$20.895m (1.74m)
B1G: ............... $40.5375m (3.38m)........$18.5375m (1.54m)
ACC ............... $34.98m (2.92m) ...........$12.98m (1.08m)
Big 12 ............ $34.45m (3.445m) .........$16.95m (1.695m)
PAC12 ............ $31.2625m (2.69m)........$ 9.2625m (.77m)
Big East .......... $23.45m (2.93m) ...........$5.95m (.74m)
Here are the numbers this is coming from. It looks closer to the other ones I have seen.
quote:
BCS Title Game (LSU): $17.5 million
Cap One Bowl (USC): $4.6 million
BCS Title Game (Alabama): $4.5 million
Cotton Bowl (ARK): $3.625 million
Outback Bowl (UGA): $3.5 million
Chik-Fil-A (Auburn): $2.9325 million
Gator Bowl (UF): $2.7 million
Music City Bowl (MSS): $1.8375 million
Liberty Bowl (Vandy): $1.7 million
BBVA Compass: Unfulfilled, loses out on $900,000
