yeah, I'm sure

I doubt that. If Gonzo were the offensive line coach then it may be a possibility. I think the OL from Florida more likely committed to LSU than to Gonzalez.

Porter played RB in college and has only coached RB's. What does he know about the technical aspects of coaching WR's? Nothing. Don't need a coach that has never played or coached WR's, trying to do just that. That would be a disaster

Porter is one of the reasons for our success. He may have been a bad coach but he knew how to recruit.

Tolbert would be a pretty good hire. Solid coach and in his day during college coaching he was a great recruiter.
Losing Gonzo wouldn't make me sad at all. That is one position I think we can upgrade in easily. Huge pool of great WR coaches to choose from. Probably one of the more plentiful "great" coach/recruiting positions in CFB.
I'd like to see Burton hired from Bama, if possible. Move Wilson to WR coach, which he did a pretty good job at Tenn and bring Burton over. Pretty sure Burton and Wilson had a strong relationship at one point. I doubt that would happen though. No reason for Wilson to risk his career at a position he isn't comfortable with.

This, this, and more of this.

WR coaches are mainly recruiters. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to coach WRs if you have talent

Gonzo has been here a few years and our only WRs of note are a former #1 recruit in the nation (for a time) and a highly recruited TRUE freshman (so the coaching definitely has had time to sink in)

Was I the only person who immediately thought of Hunter S. Thompson (Father of 'Gonzo Journalism' and native of Louisville, KY) when I read the subject of this thread?

My problem isn't replacing Gonzo. It's replacing him with Porter and pissing off Frank. It's not worth it IMO.

oh yeah. i started the whole "WR coach" thing, but i led off with a comment about how they didn't like each other
i just was trying to say no porter coaching RBs

frick i had no clue he was a coach

Not sure of his coaching abilities but he's been a pretty good recruiter I believe
Posted on 1/1/12 at 10:42 pm to BilJ
yeah black former players with a name are almost always good recruiters. reading his wiki he used to run a bunch of QB camps, so i'm sure he has contacts as well

sounds more like Illinois.
quote:
Illinois: There is a report from the Peoria Journal Star that LSU wide receivers / passing game coordinator Billy Gonzales appears set to join the Illinois staff as offensive coordinator
Beckman also hired the wr/recruiting co. from Vandy today.
quote:
Illinois: Chris Beatty will have the title of co-offensive coordinator / quarterbacks

I don't know about this. See: our WRs under McCarthy

You mean 2. He's about to finish his 2nd season at LSU.

Illinois makes sense as does louisville. Gonzales and Beckman coached together at Bowling Green under CUM and beckman runs that type of spread so they have a history.

The real question is how does he break the news to Les?
