.270 vs . 30-06

These are clearly the two most popular calibers I see in deer camps I have hunted. I personally have killed many deer with both. I am looking at a rifle upgrade and wonder is there ANY significant performance advantages for either of these cartridges for whitetail? Are they pretty much interchangeable?

Same parent case. Lower bullet weights for the .270. Not a great deal of difference if talking deer.

Sorry dude, but there are a ton of threads about this. 270 has a slightly flatter trajectory than a 30-06 round. 30-06 has slightly more knock-down power. Unless you are shooting over 500 yards the differences are neglegable.

Alright I'm here to answer all questions as I am a guru. The difference between the two rounds is very minimum. The 270 will handle any deer needs a normal hunter will experience in life. However, it will not have that power that the -06 will have. If you ever want to shoot bigger game, say Elk, you would want to have the 30-06 over the 270. Both a fine guns though. Is there any reason why you are looking at these two calibers in particular?

Even if you read Petzal and Hawks, there's just not a lot to say on the subject. They are just that similar. Not really sure why the .280 gets left out of these though. I'd buy one of those first if forced to buy a disgusting long action.

I just don't like the comparison. In the OP, we have same case/capacity with different bullet diameter. In the 7s, you have larger capacity in one yet same bullet diameter in both.

I have an old Rem 742 Jam-o-Matic in .270 that I am looking to replace. I also have a Rem 700 in 30-06 . I always like to have a backup gun plus my son meeds to borry it from time to time.
I shoot Rem Core Lokt 150g in the 06 and the deer never take another step. Same round in the .270 and they run 100yards or so.
Could just be accuarcy of rifle. Just looking for an expert with some knowledge

Thinking thats more to do with where they're being hit than what they're getting hit with.
ETA: .308 for the win!

270 wsm. Compare the ballistics and you will see the advantage. Federal has a great ballistics download on their website that I use.
