Actually...the preferred sniper round is not a 308. They'll take a 50cal all day.

I often wonder why everyone in the deer woods don't shoot a 7mag. Why just kill em when you can magnum kill em! Am I right?!

If your 7mag isn't winning arguments with a lot of guys with years and years of experience, maybe you should rethink your argument. Or not. It's all about what gives you the warm and fuzzy.

My opinion is that they are a specialized round that have a place. It's also my belief that one of the worse trends in modern hunting is the recent common belief that magnum rounds are needed in the taking of whitetail.

50cal is bad arse. Deer wouldn't stand a chance. But I think historically the 308 was used. On the other hand the 30-06 saw alot of action in a couple of WW's.

My next rifle will be a 30-06. But I would like to get one of each eventually.

I'd be asking the guy shouldered up to that rifle as to which he prefers. Doubt very seriously many are gonna choose getting pounded by a .50 cal all day over the kick of a .308. This coming from the wars going on now with multiple shots a day,not just one shot and done

.338 Lapua is a great sniper round. 2 of the 8 longest kills were from this round.

Isn't the 50cal used for taking out trucks. A 200 yard shot to kill on insurgent would be right up 308's alley, or 30-06/7mag/300mag

.50 cal is used for sniping humans.

The .308 laughs at your 200 yard shot
All kidding aside I would think a .50 would be used more for taking out enemy artillery and vehicles and such. I'd think it may be a lil overkill on a human

And it would kill me just thinking it was aimed in my direction.

Incorrect. They do love the 50 but it's situational. And in most situations it's not the preferred rifle. The .308 is and has been for a very long time. There's a lot of reasons for that.

Generally they don't want to mess with the .50 without cause or they have a permanent hide so they don't have to carry it and the ammo around. Gotta remember, it's still a big arse rifle shooting really, crazy big bullets. It's heavy, bulky, unwieldy, and sniper teams are only two guys who still have to carry all their normal equipment plus a lot of other specialized equipment in addition to the rifle.

Not to mention you shoot it much and you get a mindblowing headache. It will loosen your fillings in your teeth even if you're the spotter.

Ok guys thanks for the feedback. Despite the many Nazi accusations it did go 5 pages. I have decided to go back with another 06.Reason - I can just buy one box of cartridges!

I can think of 15 calibers I'd buy before that one.
