re: If someone pledged up to $1 billion for a "state of the art" replacement for TS

This thread is beyond stupid... TS will not and is not going anywhere during anyone's lifetime on here. I can't believe some of you would rather increase EVERYTHING about attending an LSU football game just to watch it on the jumbotron like at Jerry's World. We have the greatest stadium in the country... Just renovate, end of discussion.

Yes with the following qualifications, which I look forward to discussing:
Purpose: the future. Essential Goals in this order: Beautiful outside, practical, and beautiful inside.
Build an 115,000 plus seating capacity Ultradome between New Orleans and LSU and use it for the Saints, LSU, any nearby pro team wanting a great venue (even if part time), any Bowl, and any college conference championship. The winners and losers both get to party in New Orleans without driving.
The Dome would be linked to LSU and New Orleans by a 60 mph raised rail system that would only take 40 minutes for the students (priority) to arrive.
Unlimited acreage for events and for before-and-after-game tailgaiting and parking.
Squeeze in some roof acreage (not necessarily contiguous) to roll back for dry cool days (not a must).
Real seating. No stupid standing room only for 20K plus fans who can’t see the game.
It must be as loud as the Superdome (which is louder than Tiger Stadium).
It must be beautiful outside and inside.
No gimmicks such as giant, useless windows as in Jerry’s World. That must be for seated fans.
The SEC is expanding, and college ball is becoming more and more important.
Others can argue over benches or seatbacks; just don’t forget the goals.

Here's the deal, I'm not big on sentimental value and all that crap, but this is Tiger Stadium we're talking about. I'm for renovating every part of the stadium that hasn't already been done, but I couldnt support tearing it down at this point.
Here's a CSB - Brought my wife to her first game a few years. She HATES football and the fact that i'm obsessed with LSU. She was hell bent on not watching the game and planned on bitching the whole time.
We walked into the lower bowl and she looked up and said to me, "this is the coolest place I've ever seen, I can feel the history."
Sorry, but there is no way to build that feeling into a new stadium.

You are truly an idiot. You simply don't get it!

I would be for it. I like the idea of putting in on the river but we have a large batture area (unlike Knoxville), which would be a logistical problem. I would want to see the arches and have the new stadium maintain the same character as the old. And for God's sake, make some better parking to go with it! We really need another bridge over the river and a quasi-traffic loop.(Not just for game day - ridiculous, I admit, but if we're spending billions...)

You don't tear down "The Cathedral of College Football". Improve it, expand it. Put the left over 600 Million in an account and use the interest for future improvements and maintenance.
Tiger Stadium is the modern day Roman Colosseum.

I'd be extremely hesitant about this. The only way I'd be okay with this is if they built the new Tiger Stadium on the same field, and you have a design that looks similar to the old stadium and replicates the crowd noise. No naming rights either. No "Boudreaux's Butt Paste Field at Copeland's Tiger Stadium."
One of my concerns is that in building an entirely new stadium, you could have delays running years or more, depending on whether environmental groups want to make noise. So we might be using the Superdome longer than we think.
Just renovate the stadium. I do wish we would take care of our facilities a little better. I've been to the football stadium for the Naval Academy and it is exquisite. Puts us to shame in terms of cleanliness and attention to detail. I'd love to see Tiger Stadium taken care of to that level.

And while we're at it, let's shoot the opposing team's quarterback out of a cannon to start the game.

Two reasons why this will never happen: LA Coliseum and the Rose Bowl. How long have those stadiums been around? And in an earthquake-prone area.
How about this? Some one donates a bizillion dollars and they tear down the whole campus and rebuild it, after all, the quad is an old POS, too.
They just upgraded Texas's It's Got Sixty-five People's Names On It Memorial Stadium and it is the most boring, sterile environment I've ever been in for a college football game. Part of what I love about TS is the grimy, dark feel of it. THAT'S called atmosphere, people.
I'm curious. How many people who support this type of renovation on this post actually graduated from LSU? Roll call, if you will, please.

Tiger Stadium has a maximum of 20 years remaining, in my opinion. It will simply not be structurally sound forever.
This is not true at all. You will still need to do routine maintenance/repairs like the work that will be done early next year but the structure will be fine for decades. The steel is the only thing you have to worry about and as far as I'm aware there are no issues with the reinforcing. Concrete continues to cure almost indefinitely, so it is constantly getting stronger.

It's only used 6-10 times a year....that whole project would not be worth it....and all that historical stuff

I'm certainly no structural engineer, but I see no reason that the current Tiger Stadium can't remain viable for another century given appropriate structural maintenance.
This is true for any structure.

I have a question about the upper decks.
In a lot of other stadiums, the upper decks cover the bowl by a 1/4th or so.
WHy don't Tiger Stadium's Upper Decks cover the bowl, any?
It would get the Upper Deck crowds closer to the game without limiting the view of the field.
If they do cover the bowl, the don't cover the bowl by much.

The only thing I can say for sure is that it costs more money to have the uppers cantilever over the lowers. If I had to guess, money was the driving factor of the upper deck design.
