If five genres of music were chosen at random which five musicians/bands would be most likely to make good music in those genres?
Past or current artists are allowed
My Top 5:
The Beatles
Sublime
Queen
Pink Floyd
Skrillex- This is the only one I feel like I really need to defend. He is a musical genius. Good singer, good guitarist, good producer. Could take almost any song, remix it, and it will still sound good or even better.

The Beatles and that's about it imo. Maybe Queen as well because Freddie Mercury could sing anything from children's songs to probably hip hop if he wanted

not as long as he's hanging onto dubstep remixes

If you want to cover as many genres as possible, you need to include the Stones.

The Beatles - Probably the most versatile band ever.
Wilco - Being There is proof enough they can handle everything. Throw in pop-masterpiece like Summerteeth, grunge-discord like YHK and you pretty much have everything under the sun.
Buddy Holly and The Crickets - Although we didn't see them do TOO much, I really think all the pieces are there.
Tom Waits - Probably the most versatile musician ever.
Rolling Stones - Nuff said.
Honorable Mentions:
Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, RHCP, Queen

Certainly not Sublime. Look, I like Sublime, but they are pretty one note.
Geez...
The Stones
Drive by Truckers (they've been the backing band on blues and country albums, as well as won a Grammy with Booker T in place of the MG's)
Fugazi (Ian MacKaye is a chameleon if he wants to be - name me someone else who could be in both Minor Threat and the Evens)
The Kinks
David Bowie

The Beatles and Queen are locks for any Top 5.
Steely Dan played practically every genre in the 70's.
I agree with Bowie.
And finally probably The Police/Sting.

Andre Benjamin
Charlie Hunter
Beastie Boys
Tricky
Ween
I think all of these have experimented with multiple genres quite successfully
ETA: And have the open-mindedness to do so.

On that note, I almost put Dinosaur Jr. If I would put anyone up against MacKaye, it would be Mascis.

David Bowie
Good one I didn't think of.

Note to self: if you want to get baloo and freaux in a thread these days, start a music thread.

Yeah, the movies this year have been awful and we're beating a dead horse on a lot of TV shows. Music's the thing I'm interested in right now.
Am I the only person who is "meh" on Queen? I don't think they suck or anything, but they really aren't my cup of tea. I have Classic Queen and rarely listen to it. But people absolutely love them.
I was trying to think of someone who could put out a country album, a techno album, and a rap album. The only one I could think that could pull that off is Bowie. Maybe Kanye. Or Keith Richards. Really. I think Keith could produce a good hip hop album.

This. Two best movies this year were Drive and 13 Assassins. That's it. So yeah. Plus I'm playing catch up with this year's music.

I'm pretty meh on the band itself, catchy stuff. I think Queen gets up there on the strength of Mercury alone, he really could sing anything.

The Talking Heads, The Black Keys

Ha, probably so.

I thought about the Black Keys, but really, shouldn't we give credit and just say Dangermouse?
The Beasties are pretty dynamic but the Country Mike stuff they did is just terrible.

That's a good point. Might as well throw Albarn into the mix too. He could probably do anything.

That's being kind. And is almost the sole reason I didn't mention them.
