What is latest in Austin. Noticed that Dandy Don indicated this morning that rumors were swirling regarding potential of Saban to Texas following bowl season. First I've heard of this. Is Mack stepping down following bowl season? If so, how valid are rumors tied to Saban? Thanks.

Dandy Don just reading too much of the rant
Mack Brown will be coaching the Longhorns next year - if he was retiring it would have been announced by now for continuity of the program.

Saban is not going anywhere, Bama will be his last job.

Mack will be the HC for 2 more seasons, IMO.
After the 5-7 disaster, he wants to right the ship before turning things over.

Chris Petersen is rumored to be the 1st name on the Texas coaching wish list. I don't really see Saban to Texas simply due to his age.
After having Mack run the show for nearly 15 years, do you really want to hire a 60 yr old as your next head coach?

After some more years of experience, yes...I think Major will do great things. He's not ready yet and most UT fans will tell you the same.

Major is the most under appreciated player in Texas history.

South Carolina hired Holtz at age 62, and Spurrier at age 60. Just throwing a fact out there. Texas may want to do it if it will win them some games.

Why would Texas want Saban? They are not some talent depleted program that needs an instant turnaround in recruiting. They need a young guy known more for coaching than recruiting who wants to make a career in Austin, not a coach who will be drawing social security before the decade is up and can't even promise a recruit he will be coaching his senior year. Peterson is perfect for that job.

i dont think it will happen, but to just dismiss it like it would never happen is a bit naive. saban has never stayed at one place longer than 5 years. hes only loyal to the dollar bill. the fish bowl environment in tuscalosa is tough on anyone. its not likely, but if he made the move, it wouldnt surprise me at all.

if you could squeeze 5 years, 3 conference and 1 national title out of him, yall would.

True. I just think the smarter move would be a younger coach who could provide a lot more stability than another 60 yr old could.

This aspect of being the Alabama coach is SEVERELY overrated and overstated. It can be tough for a relatively unsuccessful coach with a shy personality but this aspect of the job has always been vastly overblown. I have a relative that goes to REC functions that Saban is at and people would be shocked at how comfortable he is in that environment and how satisfied he is with his situation.

It's hard to see Saban fitting in that well at Texas. Methinks he would chap some hides that Mack knows how to schmooze.

And that's even *if* Saban were interested. Texas fans often wrongly assume we can get whoever we want by throwing money around and reminding everyone that "we're Texas."

Reasons Saban would choose Texas:

1. $$$ They can match anything Bama can.
2. Recruiting. One of the top 3 most talent-rich states with in-state loyalty thats rarely matched... The univeristy recruits itself prolly more than most.
3. Easier road to BCS titles. His great defenses would own the Big 12-2(or whatever it is/will be).

After making at least 3 to 4 million + for the better part of the last decade I question just how important money really is to coaches on Saban's level. It isn't like he isn't financially set for the rest of his life already.

He routinely signs a top 3 class each year so I don't see how he can do much better than he already does.

He just got into the national title game for the 2nd time in 3 years and did so despite a late loss and a heavy national outcry against a rematch. I'd say he's already in a job that will give him a very good shot of competing for NCs on a yearly basis

P.S. I'd never say never with regard to Saban going to Texas but I find it amusing how LSU fans try to convince themselves and others that the Texas job offers all these major on the job advantages that Alabama somehow lacks.

Why would anyone want the Texas job? Aggie fans have told me that all of the elite recruits will want to go to College Station to play in the SEC. Texas is done.

Absolutely nailed the response. The three point argument was flawed at all three levels. You blew up each of the points and showed them as lunacy on their face. Well done.

He's right on points 2 and 3, on point 1 its pure speculation. Lots of people that were set of 2-3 generations have opted for more money.

That said, I don't think Saban is going to Texas and I really don't see why people think Texas would go after him for $10M/year. Just because in theory they could doesn't mean its likely or not horrendously stupid. As I've in other similar threads on this topic, its not like Texas has been struggling for years and deseperate to get back like Bama was in 2007 and LSU in 1999, they were in the BCS CG just 2 years ago.
