Had a guy tell me carb cleaner works wonders on getting the gunk out of the action.

I would go get solvent and stop using the wd40.

stop using the wd40.

wd40 exposes the raw metal too much and can actually promote rust, just use Hopps no9 and some lead away patches and some copper solvent,

A can of some of that hoppe's blast cleaner r something like that. Hoppe's 9 in the barrel. Then rem oil. Wipe down the outside with a silicon rag.
Though I've never completely broken down either of my guns. If I used my shotgun more I probably would after the season.

The only thing I use is rem oil and it has done the job so far.

I used that exact kit two nights ago on my 870. Nitro solvent, them the lubricant/oil. I also keep a can of RemOil handy too for in-between cleanings.

He told you right. It's the same thing as Gun Scrubber just a lot cheaper. Caution: It will strip the finish off wood!!!
For the bore I use Hoppes solvent gel and sweets. I always use a bore guide and NEVER use a metal rod. I recently tried Wipe Out. Kind of a pita, but it worked.

All I've ever used is a metal rod. The one with the sections that screw together.

Need to get you a coated one piece rod. They aren't expensive. Metal rod is bad for your barrel.
