Forget the Past -- LSU's Two QBs Have Damn Good Stats and Rankings

Anchoring is a cognitive bias that describes the common human tendency to rely too heavily, or "anchor," on one trait or piece of information when making decisions.
Many LSU fans tend to downplay the abilities of LSU's QBs.
Lee bashers tend to anchor on 2008, Bama, or the back foot.
Jefferson bashers tend to anchor on 2010 prior to Bama or holding the ball too long.
Fans desperate for a compromise tend to say that both QBs are mediocre.
Actually, both of LSU's QBs are pretty damn good.
The QB Rating statistic of LSU's QBs is damn good.
A much quoted stat throughout 2010 and the post-season was the ranking of LSU's Passing Efficiency. LSU was ranked 92 in the nation.
The Passing Efficiency ranking is based upon the QB Rating statistic. In 2010, Jefferson had a QB Rating of 114.7 (#92 ranking). Lee had a QB Rating of 119.9 (#83 ranking).
The QB Rating and Passing Efficiency ranking for LSU QBs have soared.
In 2011, Lee has a QB Rating of 151.5. He has a Passing Efficiency ranking of 23. (See Ranking of his Rating.) That's not mediocre. To the contrary, that's hugely impressive.
Jefferson's Passing Efficiency has similarly been hugely impressive starting with the Alabama game in 2010. Slice it anyway you want. Use Jefferson's 2011's stats (QB Rating of 176.4; #5 ranking). Use Jefferson's last 8 SEC games (QB Rating of 164.7; #7 ranking). Use all of Jefferson's games starting with Bama in 2010 (QB Rating of 159.7; #11 ranking). (Rankings were interpolated using NCAA stats.)
Similarly, the Yds/Attempt, TD%, and Int% statistics and rankings are all damn good.
The Completion Percentage might not be great; however, considering the competition and the yards per attempt, it's still pretty damn good.
LSU's QBs have some bad history. LSU's QBs had some bad stats in 2008 through 2010. Crowton is gone.
LSU's QBs are over it. The fans need to get over it too.
Let go of your anchor. You are missing the boat.

It will be ironic if this thread is anchored

Well done. Billable hours?

Thanks for the numbers. I understand we "rant" as monday morning qb's, but both QB's have stepped up when they needed to. I cannot see why not embrace this system as it seems to be working well, whilst keeping every future opponent spinning their head.
It was clear that Saban schemed to JL. Didn't help he didn't protect the ball, but JJ stepping up when he needed to to expose their D where we could makes the difference.
I feel that we are much more balanced of offense this year. That is all I was worried about, don't care who makes the plays or how they do it.

Thanks but I don't think it will make a difference with the people that are generating the QB threads. They are not interested in facts. They are interested in the story that came be created.

OK, now this makes no sense.

Whily I understand people's desire to find a middle ground, this is actually the line that has bothered me the most. Mainly because it has come from cooler heads. "Oh, it doesn't matter, because they both stink (or are mediocre)".
We've lost sight of how well Lee and Jefferson have played. I don't think either are playing at Heisman levels but if we set the bar of good at "Heisman level", then that's your own problem with definitions. Both QBs have been pretty effective, save the Bama game, and against WKU we saw Miles try to flip the playbook for the two. We'll see if that yields even further growth going forward.

How fortunate are we that when one Qb is having a bad game, we're not stuck with him and can go to another capable senior Qb?
Pretty awesome.

I liked the original title better

I still stand by that both are mediocre/average players.
But I'm happy they've been productive this year.

Nice stats, and excellent job. Please keep these handy. They will undoubtedly be needed Saturday night after both QB's play again, and some group of fans is hellbent on bitching about the rotation.
Well done...and Geaux Tigers!

talk about cherry picking stats....put JJ's for the whole year, hell, even add Lee's from his bad year....they are all different teams, talking about the varibles alone would take 20 pages...Fact is the offense doesnt look as good with JJ in...He takes carries away from 5 star RB's that we have recruited he doesnt hit opend 5 Star WR's consistently in stride.....Jlee looked good the first 8 games of the season and did poorly in 1 friggin qtr....and gets benched...no way on gods green earth our offense would look as good with JJ QBing...period....and I dont need cherry picked numbers to realize that, I got perfect vision watching them on the field, if I wanted numbers, id call my accountant..put all of JJ's stats on there from the beginning of the year...if he started doing so well last year as you say, you cant blame Crowton for the reasons him playing poorly like most JJ guys state...I believe crowton was terrible at times with play calling no doubt but I also see who was running his plays... Im glad JJ is back on the team and doing "ok" but his role should be what it was from games 1-7 and a few plays here and there...he did ok for the bama game, but if your tying to say he "won us the game" your not too bright....Defense, special teams and field position won that game...christ, wheres the tylenol...

I'm more than happy with both LSU's quarterbacks. GEAUX TIGERS!!

Both QB's have clearly improved. But both still make mistakes that harken fans back to the QB's recent HISTORY- which you can't ignore or rewrite.
Lee did throw off his back foot and create INT's (he still does, but the INT's haven't been as numerous). JJ still stares at one receiver and takes sacks (although he doesn't do it as much). So when these QB's repeat history, it scares fans and they retreat back to their old talking points- sometimes rightly so.

quote:Both QB's have looked mediocre in the last two games. Are they regressing again? This is the fear of the fans. Personally, I don't favor one over the other, I just wish Miles would decide a credible rotation if that's what he's going to do, and fans will accept it. Stop it with the mind games and the cute phraseology, just do it.
