kinda' getting ahead of ourselves, here. We would still have to beat the #8 team in the country (who seems to have our number), Georgia (at home), followed by the #2 team in the country. This is a recipe for blowing it.

you would like to hope our guys keep focused on the job at hand, and not listen TOO MUCH to all their buddies (and fans) who tell them they're great and just won the best game ever.
I'm pretty sure the level of competition in practice just to get playing time in the games will be plenty enough for the next couple games, but we sure don't need our DBs to get the bighead before we take on Arkansas.

quote:It is a commonly stated belief that Saban built the LSU football program. That he pulled the program out of the ashes. That his saving grace is singular and nearly impossible for any mortal man. That Miles is not as good a coach as Saban because Miles would have been unequal to the task.
settle down...Les is the only LSU coach to inherit National Championship caliber players.
Nick built it. Therefore, he gets my vote for "greatest" ever. Harder to 'build' than to 'maintain'
Saban took a team that had TWO losing seasons in a row and turned them around.
Season 1: 8-4 (5-3 in SEC)
Season 2: 10-3 (6-3 in SEC)
The argument is that no other coach could have performed such a Herculean task at LSU. Thus, the argument continues that Saban is better than Miles because Miles could have never done it. No coach could have done it at LSU.
Except that Gerry DiNardo Built LSU when it was in far worse condition than when Saban got to LSU:
1989 Mike Archer 4-7 (2-5 in SEC)
1990 Mike Archer 5-6 (2-5 in SEC)
1991 Curley Hallman 5-6 (3-4 in SEC)
1992 Curley Hallman 2-9 (1-7 in SEC)
1993 Curley Hallman 5-6 (3-5 in SEC)
1994 Curley Hallman 4-7 (3-5 in SEC)
1995 Gerry DiNardo 7-4-1 (4-3-1 in SEC)
1996 Gerry DiNardo 10-2 (6-2 in SEC)
If Dinardo could have gotten one more point in the SC game (a win instead of a tie), he would have had a BETTER record than Saban after SIX years of crappy football.
Saban inherited plenty of talent from DiNardo. Saban wasn't starting from scratch. Not even close.

And yes, Les has done an outstanding job. I would make him the highest paid in the nation. He's worth every cent.
Wow
Turn in your fan card, now.

I was going to say the same thing. Fans too young don't remember the history: DiNardo is the one who revived a flat-lined program.
Thanks for posting this forgotten truth.

I tend to agree with you Scoob, BUT
When years fade away and we look back it will be very important that we win the SEC this yr (even if we lose BCS) because this is Miles' 7th season and we have only won the conference ONE time.
We all know the SEC has been extremely tough, but he really needs to get another title.
How will everyone feel about Miles if we lose to Arky (I don't think we will) and don't even make it to Atlanta with this team?
I think ultimately he will go down as the greatest LSU coach of all time, but he has to complete this season in proper fashion first.

Great post, scoob. The line below puts it all in perspective.
quote:
Howard Schnellenberger won Miami's 1st title in 81, so you can say he built Miami; but Jimmy Johnson ran the U. Saban may have "built" LSU, but Miles is the guy running this program at elite status

Let's win the next 5 games and then we can talk about it

First, we haven't won the title yet so quick acting like we did. We still have two SEC teams out there who would love to screw us(Arky, UGA). Second, he's already the best coach LSU has ever had.

Agreed! Two BCS Championships will be unparalleled, and next year we should have a "Damn Strong" football team again!!
...last i checked he has ONE NC and 1 SECC
See: "Can we agree that Miles IS...
Love the guy, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves

I agree... but I think you need longevity to legitimately wear the crown. He'll have that if he wants it.
I don't see Les leaving until he's ready to retire. LSU has a coach for life. He's got one crystal ball and is on his way to another. He's developed a national mystique. And he has the highest winning percentage of any man who ever coached here. I've got tons of respect for Saban and the 2003 team, but the Miles era is the stuff LSU fans will be talking about for generations.

We will all agree on this until the Tigers only win 8 games in a season. At that time we will all agree he has lost his mojo.

And when we win it all again NEXT year, there will be NO question. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)
