Ive thought about that as well. The only schools that, the majority of the time, is called by their acronyms are LSU, USC, TCU and UCLA. (you might could add FSU in there as well)

This.

And Penn State is only two syllables.

No one, no one says Pennsylvannia State University.

Ah...

Hell, USC (W) has basically been shortened to SC.

There's only one LSU. Meaning, there's only one state that starts with an L.

It's the same with FSU.

What about Fresno State, Fullerton State, etc...

In my defense, I did say it's the only state...

But, otherwise, screw you for pointing that out.

I think most people know that FSU is FL St.

I'm sure there are other LSU's out there, but they just don't matter.

As I appreciate history, UCLA began this in the sixties when they were prominent in basketball, and folks at LSU followed along later due to the unique identity the acronym brings to the university.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense, and definitely is a better answer than "because its too many syllables" haha

Are you saying that LSU didn't have LSU on anything prior to UCLA doing it in the 60's?

But is it some tradition that was started, does the school request the media refer to them as that?
