What's a good starter beer for the amateur beer drinker?

Guy walks into a bar. All he ever drinks is Bud Light. He wants to venture out into real beer. What would be his first step up beer? Lets say he's at Bulldog/Chimes where theres a good tap selection.

Sierra Nevada Pale ale.

Nothing too hoppy. I would go with something a bit more malty (less bitter) as your pallette develops.
Try something like Fat Tire or Sam Adams Boston Lager.

NOLA Brown Ale
Nice and malty and not too bitter. Plus its made by a LA Brewery.

Good choice. Either this or Abita amber on tap.
Don't start with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, that one is too hoppy for a beginner.

Samuel Smith's Pure Brewed Lager Beer
Samuel Smith's Lager
Not sure if it is on tap around here though.
Cheers!

The gateway beers are always Shiner, Sam Adams, and Newcastles type of beers. Nola Brown is a great starter and is Duvel.
As for styles, wheat beers, belgium beers, or light brown ales are great beers to ease into beer drinking. You'll definitely go through a progression and just because you like or don't like a beer now doesn't mean that will hold true later. So, don't hesitate to give some beers a second try once you start getting into it. Before no time you'll be into Stouts and IPA. Good Luck, it's an expensive, albeit fun, hobby to have.

look for blonds or ambers. Don't jump right into a big beer just yet.

I drink just about anything and never had to ask anyone's opinion on what the cool beer was. Drink what tastes good to you. Do the around the world at the Chimes and try different stuff. Nothing is more annoying than a beer snob.

Nola Brown, Blonde, Duvel, Chimay, Hoeegarden (anyone that drinks Blue Moon will never have it again after they have this), Sierra Nevada Pale is likely too hoppy for most non regular drinkers.

Colt 45, as in a Colt .45 in his mouth, pull the trigger.

Go for heavy stouts. Jump right in while the water's wet!

Shiner Bock or Abita Amber.

Who ever said Sierra Nevada is crazy. That is not for an amateur beer drinker.

Does Blue Moon still have Honey Blonde? I think it may be Belgian Blonde now. Do that.
Or a sweet Hefeweizen. ShockTop is an easy beginners beer also.
