Im thinking great pick up. They have quality Basketball and Baseball. Added revenue and get Urlacher and other old football guys involved again could bring up program. Decent facilities, host bowl games, NCAA tourney games, average metro area.

Why is it a reach?

They're geographically in place, the metro, and decent overall program, reasons stated above. It isn't like UNM is small school that just became a name. They have money and people required to sustain a move.

You'd have a hard time naming a worse FBS team in America right now. They are 0-6 and 2-28 since 2009. I am not usually one to post team A against team B and team B against team C and so on, but ...

Sept 3
LSU 40 - Oregon 27

Sept 10
Oregon 69 - Nevada 20

October 15
Nevada 49 - New Mexico 7

And it isn't like they are usually good but down right now. Their last conference championship was in the WAC in 1964.

I'm not talking just football. UNM would be good overall add. The Big 12 needs more than football to survive right now.

As a Missouri fan my advice to New Mexico if the Big 12 calls is to hang up.

They have good BBall history and B12 need some non-Texas teams, even though NM has a really small population (beautiful state though).

TCU would love it

they beat New Mexico 69-0 today.

I'm just not sure NM would bring enough money into the league to offset the extra mouth.

Perhaps if the Big 12 was going to do their own network but it seems as if they aren't going to be able to make a proper one b/c of the LHN

Part of the LHN contract is that the Whorns can't participate in a conference network. They are more important (to themselves) than any conference they might want to join.

Santa Fe/Albq. Market on par with Austin, bigger than New Orleans, Memphis, Buffalo and many others.

I could name a ton of better adds then the lobos.

In no specific order.
Tulsa, UH, Air Force, tulane, Memphis, Louisville, WVU, Cincy, Utep, BYU, SMU, Boise, Utah State, Colorado State just to name a few.

The only team I can think of that would be an even pick would be U. North Texas.

There's your issue. Locksley was a terrible hire, but they were a decent program before him--even had Albuquerque add a bowl game so they could play there every year. Top 50 media market, geographic fit, solid in 3 sports. Really, not a bad pickup, and better than any of the C-USA rejects.

They really might be a good pickup. They are solid in several sports and would give the Albuquerque and santa fe markets. New Mexico was supposed to be one of the original teams in the Big 12 back in 1996. The only reason they didn't get in was that a Baylor alum that had a lot of power over the negotiations lobbied hard to get Baylor in instead.

The Lobos already have a "natural rival" with Tech. I really think you bring them in to get fat on for a bit. Big XII should copy SEC when they brought Carolina and Arkansas in. Not great in FB but good in others, rivalries already with a team in conference, and geographically makes sense.
