My WVU Experience

Was outstanding. On the way to the game there were some nasty young fans who were obviously not WVU students/alumni, but that was the rare exception.
The vast majority of WVU were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to ensure that we were having a good time and welcomed us to Morgantown. When we got into town on Friday, it seemed like everyone was wearing some WVU gear. We had several rounds of beer paid for at a couple of different bars on Friday. Their downtown area was hopping.
The WVU game day experience was also very impressive. They have a lot of state pride for their school and really showed it for this game. Tailgating was wide spread and we were offered several beers before and after the game.
Almost to a fan, they couldn't resist how much they'd like to be a part of the SEC.I can't imagine a Big East school with a better game day experience and football following than WVU. Assuming we couldn't get a FSU, Clemson, Va. Tech to leave the ACC, then I think that WVU would be the next logical choice. I get that the they wouldn't add much from TV revenue standpoint, and I get that they are not as big as some other candidates, but their fans are pretty passionate in their support for their team and the game day experience is a good start for what could be a SEC experience. They would need to find about 25K more seats.

Throwing my $.02 in as well:
the vast majority of fans were really great, some really nice people....only ran across one group of assholes....
nice stadium, but agree it should seat more, but before that, they need to work out the parking/traffic problems first...
good view from end zone seats....
beer in stadium, wonderful...but how about letting us have the tops, so we can avoid spilling it....
concession stands were undermanned, took forever to get food....
only one video screen, pain in the arse if you're in the south end zone...
CANNED MUSIC SUCKS!!!!!!!

Did they explain why they burn couches?
I have a neighbor and a work buddy who are WVU alums. Both are really good guys.

Agreed - nice post. I was told by the head of their alumni association that their biggest hurdle with joining the SEC is their lack of additional sports. It will be a huge expense to add a number of sports that they do not currently offer. IDK - He said it woud cost an additional 30 million that they don't currently have.

we asked, but were just told that it started in the 60's and just kind of stuck around. They've made changed the criminal statutes to deter the practice.

Their basketball would do well from the start. Not sure how their NCAA ranked rifle team would fit into the SEC.

The traffic was horrendous. The cops out "directing" traffic seemed to make it worse. We stayed about an hour away from Morgantown and we didnt get back to the hotel til about 3 am.

Thanks for the praises. You guys rocked too. I drank some beer with some people at the LSU rv that had the inflatable tiger on top of it. WE are adding 15,000 seats in the next few years, closing off the south end zone and putting another scoreboard in the north end zone. There used to be a big one there until the remodel with luxury boxes. Traffic will always be a problem there.

Fun trip, stadium wasn't as loud as I thought it would be for the amount of hype. But in their defense we are used to places like TS and the swamp

yeah, the need a lot more seats, but it was rocking at the start and when they pulled to within 6 points.

That was us. It got us on the front page of one of yalls newspapers.
First article "Bayou to Mountains".
Except for a couple of bad apples yalls fans were great. We did have a slight incident after the game. But I think it was two WVU fans getting in a fight with each other.

we had a very good time. fans treated us very well and i thought the atmosphere was great. most of the fans we spoke with were aware that WVU has a rough reputation, in terms of how they treat visiting fans, and were very concerned with changing that reputation. they also want desperately to be in the SEC. almost everyone we spoke with brought that up.

Couch burning is just a thing that kind of just happened. I really don't get the negative perception, it's a quirky tradition, no less trashy than say TPing a bunch of trees. At this point I would say no one goes out to burn a couch because we're destructive but because it's tradition. We're very conscious of how absurd it is, which is why it's kind of a fun thing IMO, when people make fun of it and act like we're yokels for doing it I kind of just shrug because they don't get it. I don't know, it's funny, it's fun, it's unique, it's what makes college football great.
It's weird though because some fans don't get that it's not an insult to us. At Auburn some of their fans were like "Why don't you go burn a couch? Haha" And I was just kind of like "..ok." Like I said is it any less stupid than rolling Toomers Corner or anything else?

That will come to a halt if they join the SEC.
Butch, I heard you had breakfast with some of my gang from L.A. on Sunday morning following the Oregon game. Glad you made it there as well as to the WVU game. I'm still giddy over the Oregon win.

I think they would fit in well. I know Kentucky has a team, not sure what sec schools compete though. WVU has 14 championships and 7 runner up finishes in like 31 years.

This was a really good post - the kind of mature one I joined this site for a long time ago. Alas, this is also an uncommon post.
Thanks for the information - I bet some were inclined to think otherwise about the WV fan base though the worst will always be Ole Piss to me.
