Huge enrollment, huge alumni base, great tradition, immediate rivalries with LSU and with Arkansas, plus the SEC gets a foothold in Texas.

So we are at 13 teams. A&M and the SEC are just waiting for the Big 12 to self-destruct so the SEC can avoid any possible lawsuits and A&M can avoid paying any exit fee. Great moves all around.

Meanwhile, the ACC just further watered-down its football product, and the Pac-12 is about to get geographically mangled...

The choices are very limited at this point. I think TCU or Mizzou in the West is possible.

I think Virginia Tech, West Virginia, South Florida (huge school) are options to the East...

I think we should add VA Tech and stop at 14. I don't see why we NEED to go to 16.

VA Tech is a former Big East team and probably doesn't have the same loyalties to the conference as its founding members do. It's a southern school with a strong football program.

Why do we NEED to go beyond 14 teams?

Cluckster, you are a media mogul. You must have some inside info to share with your subjects.

If it was VT, they would have made the move already. As has been discussed already (and it's a well known point), VT is tied to the UVA via politics. Is it a zero chance? No one can say for sure, but it doesn't look likely. Visit techsideline or thesabre to reinforce this point.

As for 14 teams, I'm with you. No need to go further than that for SEC if a good addition is not available.

You can pretty much exclude va tech, FSU, and any other ACC team.

20 million dollar buyout, and the FSU prez is the one who was all for raising it.

I like VT, but didn't the ACC just make it $20 million to leave?

seems like a high # for a school to met

We don't need to and I doubt they do right now.

I think they either look at 1. FSU; 2. WV; 3. MU

People.

Listen.

FSU and all the other ACC teams have a 20 million dollar buyout.

It ain't happening unless the buyout if waived. Which it won't be.

Hence why, west Virginia is the obvious choice for 14, and last.

I think all ACC teams are off the table at this point. Just unanimously agreed to 20 mill exit fee.

Agree that SEC is in a great spot, but options are limited at this point to go beyond 13.

That really only leaves Big 12 remnants, West Virginia, Louisville and TCU as possible SEC members.

Any others are not realistic.

Yeah, we all know that. And there are most likely ways around this.

And the FSU prez is the one who pushed for it to be up'd

Any ACC schools are out. If it comes down to Mizzou or TCU as the 14th school, I'd want TCU. WVU is the house favorite to be the 14th school. Teams 15/16 if they're coming would probably be Big 12 leftovers.

Meh. I guess, but to really make it work the ACC needed to be poached and that is looking less likely. Adding TAMU and WVU is cool and all, but it's almost adding just to add. I don't think that it does all that much for the SEC brand. Time will tell.

From WVU:

quote:

West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck released a statement today on the issue of conference expansion. “There is no question that the landscape of college athletics is once again changing,” Luck said. “West Virginia University has great tradition as the state’s flagship land-grant institution, and we will continue working to do what’s best for our University and its athletic teams. No matter how the college athletic landscape changes, there is no doubt WVU is and will remain a national player.

FWIW, I think the SEC stops at 14....Either:

A&M + West Virginia

OR

A&M + Missouri/TCU (Auburn moves East)

I still think the WVU being #14 stuff is a smokescreen to gauge Mizzou. We shall see.

ETA: Stop at 14

A guy in another thread had the suggestion that possibly part of FSUs negotiations to lower the buyout was to stick around until some other schools were found to help the conference look stronger. An out there theory I know but if it was true it obviously worked on all of us

If we are going to 14 (which I want) it will be WVU and TAMU and thats it. If we are going to 16 (which I think we are) I think FSU....while a MUCH smaller chance then a week ago is still in play.
