They currently have seven (including Nebraska) teams in the top 25. If that conference had had leadership anything better than grossly incompetent, they would have been fine, and I would be content playing there.

1 Oklahoma (32)
2 LSU (17)
3 Alabama (9)
4 Boise State (2)
5 Florida State
6 Stanford
7 Texas A&M
8 Wisconsin
9 Oklahoma State
10 Nebraska
11 Virginia Tech
12 South Carolina
13 Oregon
14 Arkansas
15 Ohio State
16 Mississippi State
17 Michigan State
18 Florida
19 West Virginia
20 Baylor
21 Missouri
22 South Florida
23 Penn State
24 Texas
25 TCU

The big 12's downfall is it's own fault. Any conference set up that doesn't have equal revenue sharing is bound to fail.

Why they didn't try to correct this, I'll never know.

Texas wanting to control everything is what destroyed the conference.

let's think about this... if they had equal revenue sharing, they take the chance that texas and oklahoma might not be as good, and if those two aren't good, there might not be as much revenue for everybody

if baylor or isu had made a big xii title game they'd be in this predicament a few years sooner...

IMO Three things were the beginning of the end.

1. B12 offices moved to Dallas from KC.
2. B12 title game does the same.
3. Often overlooked - Ending the OU/NU rivalry by not keeping interdivisional rivals like the SEC does.

The longhorns, OU and A&M can't afford to. In order to compete with the SEC and B1G teams they (longhorns, OU, and A&M) need to ensure the revenue received are on par with schools in other conferences.

Three Major teams cannot carry an entire conference and the remaining schools just don't carry enough weight to warrent equal profit sharing.

Yeah and all the teams that voted in agreement with it were held at gun point by Texas.

The population of the Big 12 is also a factor.

im guessing but I can bet that nearly 70% of the total Big 12 population lives in Oklahoma/Texas.

The fact is that there was not nearly enough eyeballs in the northern part of the conference to warrant equal consideration.

SEC / Big 10 / Pac 12 is pretty evenly distributed. All have one city that is pretty homogenous(ATL / Chicago / LA), all other states dont dwarf each other.

It's amazing that everybody in that conference sucks at the hind teet of Texas and OU...Why couldn't the remaining 10 just say, share the revenue equally or get the hell out.

The fact that the big 12 has weighted voting based on how rich each school is, is just mind boggling.

Early in the 12 team era for the SEC it was nothing but Bama and Florida. That seemed to work ok.

The smaller schools were scared they'd leave - funny they feel like banding together and pushing their weight around (they are the majority) now when the schools actually ARE trying to leave.

You're right though - this is each members fault, including A&M. You either pushed for unequal revenue or allowed it to happen.

Denver, St Louis and KC are pretty large metro areas, especially Denver. The bigger problem is that those areas (and the old Big 12 North schools in general besides Nebraska) don't support football all that well, and I think the Texas and Oklahoma schools tried to take advantage of that in a way by moving everything south, like the headquarters and Championship game especially.

I don't think this is true. The SEC has had their share of down teams over the years but they have managed to keep parity and in my opinion, the conference's commissioners have always strived to keep each school relevant. The Big XII was too weighted to take care of the big teams and starved the small ones. K-State, Ok State, TTech, Missouri - they have all been just as competitive as the mid-market SEC teams at any given time. Ole Miss, Miss State, SCar, Kentucky, Vandy, etc.

If some teams get more than others, the conference is doomed.

what's sad is all this time big 12 schools are using to threaten to sue each other could be spent trying to find viable replacements to keep the league going.

Very true, but it's too late for that now. Who will want to join a conference when their commissioner has just announced that a document signed by him doesn't mean anything?

ISU nearly did it in 2004, IIRC.

They ended up blowing it by dropping the last game of the season, instead giving Colorado the "honor" of getting raped by the powerful OU squad that got into the BCS title game over Auburn.
