The QB situation moving forward...

Based on what you saw in the game, and reports from fall practice, how do you guys think the QB situation is? Will Lee continue to manage the game and improve through the season? Will Mett, now knowing he may have a shot to start by the end of the year, put the effort required to make it to the first team?

I think we may see a little bit of Mett against NSU.

no Lee is going to try to mess it up so Mett can take over....
the rant is really full of idiots, just make it stop!!

I've always preferred Lee to be the starter with JJ coming off the bench. Hopefully we will get JJ and Shep back soon. I was hoping Shep would be running the Wild Tiger a few plays every game.

i think it will be lee's job from here on out barring injury or sudden rash of badness. i expect lee to become more comfortable as the year progresses and i expect him to improve along those lines. remember lee was thrown into the fire as a freshman and never became comfortable due to multiple reasons. the following years he had spot duties but now i truly expect him to blossom into a good, not just serviceable, quarterback. we'll see.

I'll be honest. Early in the game, I had a brief thought of "uh oh, would be nice to have JJ right about now".

Yeah, i gotta admit when he stands with shoulders square to his target and throws flat footed falling backward, i gotta admit my sphincter puckers up a little bit and i say, "oh shite!".

I hope so.
I think what the coaches are witnessing from the QB position in practice are two quarterbacks that are performing equally with the green jerseys donned. And JL getting the nod from Les as the starter because he has slightly better command of the playbook.
However once the green jersey is off, JL is forced in to inaccurate throws (hurried throws, throws off the back foot). JL's foot work needs to improve (needs to be faster) and that will allow him to react and deliver the ball quicker. I hope we see improvement from week to week now that JL is the starter, and we see what the coaches are seeing in practice during game time.

is there any indication he's not putting forth the effort anyway?

The backup QB truly is the fan favorite on a football team.

Interesting. I didn't think about JJ once unless the announcers said something
and I supported him as starter when he was with the team
FWIW JJ is not playing another down of football for LSU but we can all wish it would or we can move on, I chose to move on

I watched a YouTube video of all Jarrett Lee's throws, and being a former Quarterback, I paid particular attention to his footwork.
This is what I'm noticing from Jarrett...on screens and deep balls he is definitely coming off the back foot...I don't know if it's a matter of comfort with his touch or what, but it's every one like clockwork.
On Short and Mid-range passes, what some might call back foot throws are actually level-footed throws...now, he is not stepping into his throws like he should, but this is not exactly terrible mechanics.
And for all the guys who say that he retreats and throws off of his back foot under pressure, I have to disagree. I watched and re-watched every pass he threw in the Oregon game, and he stayed in the pocket and made several level-footed throws and took a hit upon releasing the ball.
Also, I noticed that he will make a level-footed throw and then back pedal the hell out of the way so he doesn't get his legs rolled up, but some may think that because he's backpedaling that it's a back-footed throw.
IMO he's shown vast improvement, and now needs to work on stepping into his throws.
We need to stick with this kid and let him continue to improve.

preface - I supported JJ when he was the starter, it isn't like I had a say so I might as well deal with it.
I think if we would have taken the lumps with Lee from the beginning we might have a pretty damn good QB right now. As it is we have a decent QB still improving. I think he will be fine. Yes he will make a mistake and yes the rant will meltdown because he threw a int, but all in all I think he will do just fine. I just wish there was a way to keep everyone from going off the deep end when that inevitable interception happens.

Looking at the stats..had Lee attempted as many passes as DT then he would have put up similar numbers(this is given that the wr's still dropped a lot of those passes). I think we're sticking with LEE as the starter, but Mett will get some nice playing time this weekend.

imo, you really don't improve that much once the season starts. there is less practice time, much less contact, and for the qb position lee won't get the "real game" pressure or contact. what you see is what you get with lee, he will play better in some games but not as well in others.
its now in lm hands to figure out how to "manage" the new qb situation we have.

Id like to see a rational discussion as to why so many people think Mett CANT step in and play well.

If Lee can pass for over 2000 yards this season, it's going to be special. I would like to see what Mett can do in case he is needed. If Lee starts crapping the bed, Mett can come in and give Lee a chance to sit on the pine. The pine helps players figure things out.

He's been there for a few years. I don't think another stint would make a difference.
