How will expansion affect the LSU/Florida rivalry?

If the SEC ratifies aTm to be a member and then out of necissity has to add another school(let's say from the east and that team is Florida State), how will it affect the LSU/Florida game being played each year? LSU has played Florida every year since 1953 with the exception of 3 years from 1968-1970. Florida State is already permanently on the Gators schedule each year. I have a lot of friends from Florida and happen to enjoy this game even though they have owned us since 1988 going 17-6 against the Fighting Tigers. The alltime series is 30-24-3 Florida. I would hate to see this end. Thoughts?

I think the annual game is over. I talked about this a litte in another thread. I don't see how we'd be able to keep this game annually or else it would leave us with only one rotating non-division game per year. Could you imagine only playing Tenn, SC, or GA once every 6 years or twice every 12? The only way to keep the non-division permanent opponent games would be to add a 9th conference game to everyone's schedules but I don't see the SEC doing that.

I agree but i would rather play 9 conference games than play Tech, ULL, and Jewlane on rotations. Revenue wise, it makes more sense for the conference to play 9 games. But getting the schools to agree to it is another thing.

It will be sad if this game is ended yearly. Expansion has hurt some great UF games over the years, we lost the Auburn series the last time they re-worked the schedules. This is a game I love to play, because it is a always a huge game and I feel like there is a lot of respect between the two schools and fanbases.

Another interesting question about the possibility of 9 conferences games would the home/road game breakdown. Some years you'd have four home conference games and some years five. The years with four, a team would have to schedule all three non-conference games at home in order to have 7. This may be difficult to accomplish, especially if you want to keep a few big non-conference games on the schedule like WV, VA Tech, Wash St. Mark my word, some, if not all, SEC teams would drop these big non conference games if we played 9 conference games. Either way you slice it, something I like is going to change.

The out-of-division rotation would just move to "every 6 years" instead of "every 5 years."
For example, LSU played Tennessee at home in 2000, 2005, and 2010. Every 5 years.
New Format: (Let's pretend Florida State joins from the East.)
2012 - South Carolina (Home), Kentucky (Away)
2013 - Georgia (Home), South Carolina (Away)
2014 - Vanderbilt (Home), Georgia (Away)
2015 - Tennessee (Home), Vanderbilt (Away)
2016 - Florida State (Home), Tennessee (Away)
2017 - Kentucky (Home), Florida State (Away)
2018 - South Carolina (Home), Kentucky (Away)
2019 - Georgia (Home), South Carolina (Away)
2020 - Vanderbilt (Home), Georgia (Away)
2021 - Tennessee (Home), Vanderbilt (Away)

IMO, the length of time of playing a H/A with every member of the conf, should not be longer than 5 years, and really should be 4. A player should have the opportunity to see every SEC venue during his eligibility.

I agree completely. The loss of conference cohesion is probably my main problem with expansion. The conference already seems a little too big with Arkansas and SC. Add in two more and it is getting really unweildy (at least for football). How can you be rivals with the other teams in your conference if you are only playing them every five years?

I agree 100%. This game has basically decided who the best team in the SEC was during the 2000's and we never played each other in Atlanta for the conference Championship.

Florida and LSU were undoubtedly the class of the SEC during the 2000s. I've absolutely love the rivalry we have developed with them over the years.

I don't think it ends, simply because Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-UGa won't die. IF the SEC takes a team like Mizzou, then I suppose Bama and Auburn enter the East, and their rivalries with Tenn and UGa are preserved, but the LSU-Bama and LSU-Aubbie rivalry are killed.

I doubt the SEC goes to nine conference games. The schools count on paying teams like ULL to come and get a beating so they can collect the home game ticket sales. There is no home and away with the teams we usually schedule.

Well if Missouri joins the West, only one team from the West would have to move to the East, not two.

Therein lies the problem. The most logical geographical move is Auburn which would end the Alabama-Auburn rivalry.....unless Auburn became the permanent opponent from the East which would end the Bama-UT rivalry?
