Do you boil the water first and then put the crabs in or do you put the crabs in and bring the water to a boil?

Boil first, bring to a rolling boil, add crab, return to a boil and wait eight minutes, turn off fire and soak for at least twenty, start tasting

Boil the water first. Have the crabs ice cold when you add them.

In addition I add liquid and powder to help season full crabs. Warning doing so with poor crabs will make for very spicy crabs

1) Rolling boil
2) Add live crabs (doesnt matter if they are cold or not. Cold just means their claws stay on. Since you are going to be removing the claws, having some of the claws fall off aids in your cleaning)
3) Return to rolling boil
4) Cook for five minutes at rolling boil
5) Turn heat off and let soak 20-30 minutes

I've heard adding the crabs before the water is boiling wakes them up slowly and they move around and knock their legs off.

Well allright then. Do you know why they fall off? Is it because they are boiled for too long?

Your info wasn't wrong. They do fall off if they aren't chilled and I'm assuming if you bring the water to a boil with the crabs in there they will throw even more claws.

I've heard of people putting them in the water then bring it to a boil. I didnt eat them but i'm certain some people do this. Cant vouch for legs falling off or staying on

Did 10 dozen this exact same way last night. Good Lord they were good! My ville-platian uncle is gonna lose a hand one day if he keeps sprinkling powdered crab boil all over food already pulled from the pot!
