Any types or ideas?

This girl that I've been talking to wants to try and make our own sushi rolls for before a housewarming party she's throwing.

Terrible idea. Reminds me of someone I know who asked opinion on basic cooking classes before she got married. Then promptly signed up for a sushi class.

About 1000 things can go wrong when making sushi, all of which will 30 minutes before your guests arrive at the party.

Making the rice perfect is damn hard, may want to practice that.

The sushi roll I just ate for lunch had salmon, tuna, Krab, and avocado on the inside and tuna, Krab and avocado draped over the top. It came with two sauces but I didn't use them. It was damn good.

Personally i think it'll be harder to do than she thinks (but im not going to tell her that). I think it's worth a try and we're not going to get crazy and try to make some extremely difficult type of roll.

Have you bought the bamboo roller? The nori?

Besides the fact you wont be able to find sushi grade fish unless you go fishing in the gulf the day of the party or day before. And we all know that shite aint happening.

ETA: Sorry this is harsh. I just don't see how trying something new on guests which you both have very little clue how to do is going to work out for anyone. Maybe it is self-experience but there is going to be a huge blow out fight down this path. If you go fwd with this, buy a lot of sake.

Convince her sashimi is better and the rice is a waste of calories and go buy a bunch of tuna from WF and start slicing.

You can get sushi grade fish at whole foods. That being said it's a terrible idea. I've made sushi twice; it's ridiculously expensive to make, is messy, and takes a long time.

But if she really wants to do it, stick with one type of fish and add shrimp, which you can boil ahead of time. Buy cucumber, avocado, and carrots. Keep the rice/nori under 1/4 inch thick, and add no more than 1/3 inch of the fillings. Practice.

Good luck!

The wife bought a how to make Sushi book that came with a DVD. We've never tried it because it looks like it's waaaaaay more trouble than it's worth considering all the adequate sushi options available around town. I would say avoid this at all costs but if you have to go with the nigiri sushi, they seem like they'd be the simplest to make.

I have encouraged my wife to roll her own, I am confident it is something she can't burn, and she always burns stuff.

Of course you could have a "Roll Your Own" sushi party

That way if the rolls suck guests will at least blame themselves.

There is no way they will get the rice correct.

How about calling around to a couple of sushi places and see if they will sell you rice. The rice is the hardest part...

Before any decent sushi chef ever touches a knife or a fish they work for years doing just rice. This idea sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
