Is Ty Ross set in stone? Ross struggled terribly at the plate last year and is hitting .160 this summer in cape cod. Meanwhile, Jackson Slaid is hitting .350 in his summer league (not as good as Cape, but still a HUGE difference). Ross was the highl touted draftee coming in but Slaid is outperforming him at the plate a ton...is Slaid just not good defensively?

Look, I have been there done that with this guy. Ty Ross is going to be a big time catcher. Sure, he is not a Micah Gibbs or Brad Cresse but the dude is a good catcher.

Actually, his hitting improved throuhout the course of the season. He had such a terrible start that his final numbers finished poor. He had some clutch hitting mixed in with some good defensive plays near the end.

Bottom line, Slaid can hit but he is not a strong defensive catcher. He was also the 3rd C on the roster last season behind Ross and Snickeris

He is that good defensively. I'd also like to see him continue working on his rapport the freshmen pitchers we have returning.

Anything he gives us on offense is a bonus IMHO

I don't think anybody's job (except for maybe Nola at SS) is set in stone for next year.

Ross will be starting unless he gets injured or suspended

Not set in stone, per Mainieri.

Given this is a team that failed to make the SEC tourney I would expect all positions to be open to whomever can claim them with their play.

Agree 100%. No position should be set in stone at this point, not even Nola at SS .Ross had some good moments behind the plate, but there is still much room for improvement. If you are gonna compare him to Micah Gibbs.... he's got a long way to go.
