Go down as one of the GOAT? Obviously not at this point in his career but considering he is the best player in the world at age 23 I could see him possibly becoming one of the greatest

He has to have international success. Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Beckenbauer, and Ronaldo have all won World Cups.

The same goes for Messi.

FYI, the economy will collapse in late 2008.

Not even close, he would have to carry Portugal to the cup in 2014 then resurrect his 2008 form for a few years all at the same time not coming off as a huge douche bag. Even after all that he wouldn't be the goat, just on that top tier.

At his current rate of success, with or without a WC title, I don't think it is out of the question that he can't be considered "One" of the best of all time.

that's so bullshite

a great player will get 2-3 world cups (4 absolutely tops) to showcase anything, and there are 10 men on a soccer pitch

I believe Messi could be one of the greatest as well. They are the top two in the game at a young age

Ronaldo has dominated the EPL and La Liga. It's not inconceivable that he goes down as one of the best. I'd put him in the Samuel Eto'o category of being a BAMF but lacking national team notoriety through no fault of their own (i.e. not having a brilliant manager and having a poor/not elite supporting cast).

haha

as much as i hate to say it, as i hate this douche, i do think he is in the very top tier of this generations players. he's won tons of honors on both an individual basis and a team basis.

at the end of the career, i think he has a shot at being one of the GOAT.

I agree. I think his lack of a supporting cast will only help his argument I he is able to perform well on the international level

You can't apply this across the board. CR plays for Portugal. You can't expect him to lead them to a WC trophy.

I could see a lack of WC success being a valid knock on Messi though if he doesn't get one.

i don't think you can apply that in general

FIFA Player of the Century

out of the top 10 listed, the following didn't win a WC (if i'm wrong, somebody correct me)

2. Cryuff
4. di Stéfano
6. Puskás
7. Platini
9. Eusébio

I get what you are saying, but if Messi never wins one he will never equal Maradona in many peoples eye's. No matter how many other player of the years and cups/titles he wins.
