All are very new restaurants so take it for what its worth.

Velvet Cactus is not trying to aspire to anything great on a culinary scene. Its more of a mexican gastropub with just solid food and hot hostesses. Tacos were very disappointing...enchiladas were better.

Now on to restaurants that deserved to be talked about. Garcia opened BOTH restaurants tonight...only Garcia could swing this. He bounced between the two.

We started at High Hat (Detla cuisine): the place looks like an old woolworth and the prices are very low. Delta tamales...very good. They are not quite Hick's, but they are serious Delta tamales. My wife liked the pimento cheese a lot...I thought it was just good. It had too much pimento in it for me, but it was still good. Chicken sausage gumbo was excellent as was the side of sweet potato salad. When I go back I would get the delta tamales and one of the catfish platters and maybe the grilled donut with ice cream. I think this place has a HUGE potential....I want it to find itself though (they have pimento cheese burger, but no pimento BLT or grilled pimento cheese sandwich...no fried okra? no fried green tomatos? no comeback sauce or dressing?...need to step up the Delta items). This place is going to be a huge hit...huge. Why? bc delta food is fricking awesome.

Ancora was great as well. They cure their own salumi. One of the better plates of Italian meats we have ever had (and we both have toured Italy extensively). I had an ancora old fashioned with satsuma...excellent cocktail. We split a pizza with cheese, sauce, salumi...burn on the sides and underneath like a good Naples pizza should be. The oven is wood burning oven was built in Naples. This place is going to be great as well. Garcia, not surprisingly, will have two more hit restaurants.

mexican gastropub
Silly use of an overly trendy term. Gastropub? Come on!

how else do you want me to describe...a mexican-themed beer hall that serves okay food with a nice patio and a couple of hostesses I would like to stick it in?

3 new restaurants to discuss and thats the best you can come up with?

Sorry, that just leaped off the screen at me as being really goofy looking. If it makes you happy, the reviews of the other two places look good.

I went there Friday and was disappointed...The wait was fairly long (didn't realize the place was so small). The best thing about the evening was the margaritas which were excellent. I had the fajitas which were nothing to write home about and carried a pretty hefty price(for a Mexican restaurant)$19. For that I expected a little more and was left disappointed. The salsa was also so-so, it would have nice if they had decided to use a recipe that incorporated fresh ingredients, instead of your garden variety bottle salsa.

Maybe I was so disappointed because I went to Mondo on Wednesday and thought it was a really solid place, and a great value.

The place is small inside. Too many tables and very sterile, pack them in feel. Service matched it as the waitress just wanted to turn our table over.

Just like you're sick of Mike's arrogant attitude on here, I'm sick of always reading about the hot waitresses or hot bartenders. I'd go on but I don't feel like wasting my energy. I haven't had any coffee today.

Agreed.

Just take the food for what it is.

There was literally a swarm of cute hostesses. I was with my wife which likely curbed some of that enjoyment.

I was exciting about checking the place out. Now, not so much.

I suppose I'll go there for drinks some time

But please don't mention the hot waitress. Don't want to upset the natives.

It might be the only reason I go to the place

I will go and drink and have appetizers on the patio this fall. I at least hope they have someone making better margeritas then.

When I found out it was some of the guys who own bulldog/lagers, I knew not to expect much with the food. They are going to go with the safe and profitable food vs taking any chances at all. It will be acceptable food and they will have a good staff in a few months.

One of the main reasons Garcia has been so successful (and Link does this as well) is that when he opens another restaurant he does so with a chef partner who is in charge of the day to day operations, the style of food, etc... It allows Garcia to have a capable hand running the business, but also a hand that has an ownership interest and is not just an employee.

Other chefs around country do this, but those two have really perfected it in this region.
