Cleveland receives:
Rip Hamilton (from DET)
2nd overall pick (Derrick Williams)* (from MIN)

*Cleveland will take Kyrie Irving with 1st overall pick

Minnesota receives:
4th overall pick (from CLE)
8th overall pick (from DET)

Detroit receives:
Relief of Rip Hamilton's contract, which still has two years and $25.3 million left on it.

Per Chris Broussard

So Cleveland would have the #1 and #2 picks, and Rip Hamilton?

What's Hamilton's contract?

ETA: FWIW, on the surface, I really like this trade.

of course you do. You give up the #4 pick for the #2 pick and a player.

Wow. Fantastics trade for Cleveland. Not terrible for Minn either. Give up the 2 and get a 4 and 8.

Why would Detroit do this? Is there someone they're targeting this offseason?

I'm not an expert on the cap situation the Cavs are in. Luckily, that would be the only issue. Gilbert's a great owner. He doesn't care how much he has to spend (and lose) to win (unlike most small market owners). I just don't know if it will affect the possibility of picking up other players in FA. But still, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

That would certainly be a good start for Cleveland. Having the #1 and #2 picks in the draft.

I'd still take Kanter instead of Derrick Williams. Was Williams just a 1 year wonder? We don't know, but not many guys can keep up a 60% pace behind the line.

It seems very odd of Detroit. I know Hamilton's contract sucks, but getting rid of not only him, but the #8 pick in exchange for nothing? Just to get rid of his contract? Seems a little strange.

I can't imagine the NBA allowing Detroit to do this. Give up your best player and the #8 pick and get literally nothing back in return?

I would think that Detroit would have to get something other than relief from Hamilton's contract. That basically sounds like waiving a guy to dump his contract but not actually exposing him to waivers. It looks like collusion.

FWIW, I'm seeing elsewhere Detroit would get Cleveland's trade exception in the deal.

if they are looking to shed money then they wont have to pay Rip or the #8 pick

its a weak draft, so its not like there is a cant miss player at 8 anyway

I'm not saying detroit wouldn't do it, I just don't think stern will let them. You gotta get something back, right?

has to be a trade exception involved. Actually I like this trade for all 3 teams.

I would totally love this. Ive always been a Rip fan and I think people have written him off too soon. With decent performances by the 1 and 2 we could sneak into the playoffs next year.
