I'm pretty sure the cat ain't 90+ years old. If you are, you only have one shot anyway, make it a bolt action! AND if you are that old, you shouldn't need any advice from us. If you don't know it by now, you never will.
Great little gun. More deer have lost their lives to a 30-30 then any other round. There are better options, but the lever guns have some serious nostalgia. And I am all about some character.

With this new information, I can say that it will be a cherished heirloom. Very cool gift.
He would get more use out of a bolt gun in the long term, but not for that price. If that's what you are feeling, do it. Very cool.

A. Why would you want a lever action
It's fast, simple, reliable, compact, light, tried n true, solid, accurate...

B. Why would you want a rainbow shooting 30-30
Bet I can dirt roll a deer at 100 yards with mine.
Is it the best gun on earth??? It depends. For some hunters, it is the best. I would venture to say that if you do not shoot past 200 yards, it is the ultimate rifle IMHO

I took at least 20 bucks with the 30-30 scrape hunting in Jackson Parish. This was in the early 70's. Most shots were 70 yards or less. Reliable gun..easy to tote.

One of few ways to prove a straw purchase, displayed intent on a forum jk

Price seems about right. This exact gun is what I started deer hunting with many many moons ago. Man I killed some deer with that sucker. Loved that gun!!

Great brush & trail gun. Love the nostalgia as well.

If I'm having to go into thickets, I don't want to drag by scoped Browning into that mess. A lever action is reliable and cheap. If I've got to hack my way through briars with it, it won't hurt my pocketbook. Plus, if that hog is 30 yards out, I know that 30-30 will tear him up.

I have a Marlin 30-30 and a Marlin 35 caliber and both are great guns..I'd go ahead and buy it at that price because those guns go up in price a little every year.
