Apparently Opies is now Phil's oyster bar and restaurant. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Is Phil a well known chef/owner?

I've only been going to the place for less than a year and it seems like it has changed hands several times in that short period of time.

New owners took over in January. They've made some changes to the menu(for the better) and extended the hours of operation. They are changing the name back to Phil's for nostalgia's sake. For you young uns it used to be Phil's Oyster Bar many moons ago.

Was it the same owners that moved Phils to College before failing there?

My grandfather used to want to go to Phil's every time we came to BR. I remember the food was really good. Then I heard that they moved over to College and the quality really suffered, and they closed a few years ago. Is that right? I haven't been over to that part of BR in a while.

Hopefully it's good. I only went twice after Opie sold it. It was really close to my house at the time. It was terrible those two times. Really slipped without him in the kitchen.

The owner Gus Piazza got sick and died, bad move to begin with. That location off College is a killer.

wonder if the new owners are any relation to Gus. Even if not I have to try it once and revive some great old memories and some I cannot quite remember............

God I remember Gus running a huge bookkeeping operation out of there. My roommate in college was a bus boy and would drive around town with envelopes stuffed with $$$ and drop them off at various law firms and doctor's offices all over town. At one point, Gus had LSU athletes involved in the delivery of $$$ and his reasoning was that he wanted to help them out and also anyone meeting with or having lunch with an athlete could be easily explained away.

I don't know the extent of his involvement, but I remember Gus Piazza name being tossed around in the Lester Earl scandal....

So is the food/menu like Opie's or like Phil's was? This is very interesting... I miss Phil's, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

I had never been there when it was phil's. But 2 weeks ago they had pretty much the same menu they had when i went a year ago. So i guess it's opie's menu?

I've heard some interesting things whispered about the owners of this place years ago.

In any case, too bad Opie sold the place, loved the food at the Cajun Cafe when he was in the kitchen.

I don't know the history of when the place changed hands or how many times it changed. But, the first few times I went, probably a year or so ago, the crawfish ettouffe was really good.
