Well much to my chagrine, this blog from the LA Times is quoting an anonymous source that Alleva is indeed paying Nikki Caldwell $900K/year to coach the LSU women's basketball team.......which of course is slightly above the $700K/year that I've been tellin' yall that Joe was going to pay the next women's basketball coach at LSU.

A little less than I thought.
That is very good though.

I guess Joe was determined to do what needed to be done. Just call him Don Corleone...............

Does the women's basketball team bring in that much revenue to merit that salary?

They brought in a good bit of revenue in the late Gunter years and Pokey years but lost money the last few years. Besides, when any sport is good, it generates free marketing for the school, so I guess it is justified if we start making final fours again.

I'm pretty sure the WBB team loses money each year.

Link? Not saying you're wrong, but I have a hard time believing this.

Whether it does or not, clearly does not influence whether LSU pays for quality coaches or not. And rest assured.........................they got a quality coach with this hire.

no, and that is more than LSU's national championship winning baseball coach...

Market value

Alleva is embracing women's basketball before the masses do. we'll rack up like 20 national championships, become the best women's basketball program, and then it will get popular.

Probably b/c at most schools college baseball brings in less than WBB, and that determines the market value for a good coach.
That said, LSU is a special case and if PM can bring in the bucks he should be compensated appropriately.

There is no reason women's basketball can't do very well at LSU.
With Nikki Caldwell, we might just do very well, indeed!

Hope she does well here. Wouldn't be surprised if Tennessee comes calling when Pat Summit retires.

But what if Caldwell says she has a damn fine basketball team???

if memory serves, the women's basketball team turned a profit a few times back in the mid 2000's. If she can get us back to that level then it's well worth it IMO.
Gotta spend money to make money.

If Caldwell turns the program around, and we start competing against Tenn. again for SEC titles and beyond, the fans will be back & profit will be made...I hate bandwagon fans, but if they pay money to attend games & LSU makes money, that is a good thing...

This is fricking dumb to pay your women's basketball coach that much. I pray when our coach retires we hire a volunteer head coach so we're not wasting 1.2 fricking million dollars a year on a women's basketball coach. The sport is so awful it's not even funny.
