This is fricking dumb to pay your women's basketball coach that much. I pray when our coach retires we hire a volunteer head coach so we're not wasting 1.2 fricking million dollars a year on a women's basketball coach. The sport is so awful it's not even funny.

UT would pay much more than that for the return on its investment.

Assuming we could have gotten a coach for $250k (I'm sure we could get a pretty good one for that) and assuming people pay about $10 a ticket to go to a game, she'll need to put 4,300 more butts in seats PER GAME to pay her salary. At the height of LSU women's basketball in 2005-2006, we only averaged 6200 a game. Her chances of being able to do that are slim.

I know this is simplifying it and leaving out some potential advertising, TV, merchandise, concessions revenue. But the point remains: this is a money loser for the athletic department in the long run. Considering the budget crunch the school is going through right now, I think this salary is borderline obscene

Nikki Caldwel is an excellent hire

Nikki Caldwell Bio

-Won a national championship as a player and coach at UT
-Studied under one of the best coaches in WBB with Summit
- Very young and enthusiastic ,great recruiter
- Not to mention she is preety damn cute
- Turned down a very mediocre UCLA squad into a nationa l power
3 YEARS UNDER HER
Season Team Overall Conference Standing

2008–2009 UCLA 19–12 9–9 T–4th
2009–2010 UCLA 25–9 15–3 2nd
2010–2011 UCLA 27–4 16–2 2nd

You see a steady improvement over the three years , which is great

And Finally she is quite the looker!

Ha! You obviously don't pay any attention to women's basketball. No way could you have gotten a "pretty good" coach for $250K/year.

"Butts in the seats" don't pay her salary. The LSU athletic department does.

That wasn't "the height" of LSU women's basketball. In 2004-05 we averaged over 7,300 per game. And why are her chances of doing that slim?

11 of the 14 sports at LSU are "money losers". What's the point? Only teams that bring in money should have good coaches and thus, settle for being mediocre? Why even have the programs then?

The university is going through a budget crunch. The athletic department, which is self-sustaining and receives no state funds, is not. It's prospering quite well. The only salary on LSU's campus that's obscene is the coach who makes almost $4 million/year.

But, both he and the women's basketball coach are worth every penny, and money well spent.

I think Nikki is an EXCELLENT hire. I honestly didn't think she'd leave UCLA for LSU. She would've been my second choice after Walz. I don't think we are missing much with Nikki. Walz is just a little more proven but other than that, she's probably just as good a hire as he would be...............and probably is costing us less than he would, even at $900K/year.

We could get someone significantly better than Van. I bet Lisa Stockton at Tulane doesn't make that and she beat us this year!

b/c we won't have another Seimone Augustus. She's a once in a lifetime player.

What are the salaries of those coaches in the 11 other sports? 900K? No. Except for maybe track, who is responsible for two teams, none should break 250K. I bet softball does though

this is just an opinion, but when the athletic department is sitting on a surplus in tough times maybe they should consider supporting a school in a budget crisis instead of overpaying for coach in a minor sport. 900K could pay the salaries of 10 professors for the next year!

stupid, stupid, and stupid... there is NO reason a coach's salary should get tripled... how could LSU not negotiate for less?

This isn't an opinion. It's a known fact. Also, the athletic department functions as an entirely different entity from the Baton Rouge campus of LSU. Besides, the athletic department already gives MILLIONS back to the school every year.

What more do you people want? Are you just looking for an excuse to bitch about everything and women's basketball happens to be a good target? Quit being so myopic and simple-minded. If you want to have a successful athletic department, prepare to spend money (FYI: $250,000 wasn't going to get you a good basketball coach). Football has been and will always be responsible for generating the revenue that pays for all the other sports. Get over it. We aren't going to re-invent the proverbial wheel in terms of athletic financing and expenditures all of a sudden.

Why do we get this ignorant statement daily on this board?

Alleva is in charge of the AD, and apparently he knows how much we can afford for a womens basketball coach.

My guess is that 425k will get you a third rate womens BB coach.
