Glenn Guilbeau: It's time for everyone to get over Russell Shepard. He's just not that good of a player. He's undersized. He's fast, but LSU's got plenty of fast players. If it's that hard to make somebody have an impact, maybe that player's just not that good. I think early on LSU's coaching staff made mistakes with Shepard, but at some point he has to step up.

Glenn Guilbeau: Shepard playing or not playing had nothing to do with the outcome of a single game last season.

When given the chance Shep did make an impact.. mind you it wasnt at WR where he could and likely will use a little work on his pass catching but Crowton's inability to allow anybody to have an impact should be taken into account as well.. i think this season should be a very telling year for Shepard

But what did he say that isn't true? Patrick Peterson was an amazing player. He met all his expectations and then some. Shepard had probably more hype than PP and he hasn't lived up to it so far. There is still time though.

I agree with Guilbeau...RS is simply not that great of a player. He was made out to be Percy Harvin and that was probably unfair to Shep. He seems to be a great young man and representative for LSU, but he is not what we were told he would be IMHO.

So we beat UNC without his 2 TDs??

probably a lot of jefferson's big runs (e.g., 70-yd td run the first play of the ol miss game) had a lot to do with the opposition worrying about shepard getting outside. if opponents saw shepard's long td run against auburn the prior year, i'm sure it has an effect whenever he's in motion.

Shep is a great decoy.

Glenn Guilbeau: I'm picking LSU to win it all this year, too. Based on last season, the Tigers will have a very high preseason ranking since they return so much of their team. Then if they beat Oregon, they will probably move up to No. 2 or No. 1. Then it's all there in front of them, including the BCS title game in New Orleans. The defense is loaded. The offensive line is very good. The WRs and TBs are good enough. All they need is a decent QB, and Zach Mettenberger will be that.

Not often that I, hell I even gag while typing it, agree with guilbeau but I can't argue much with what he is saying. He was NOT recruited at LSU to be a qb (sure he was told he would be given a shot), not a pocket qb, we aren't oregon, & he ain't cam newton. Couldnt' see him getting #1 time at RB with the guys we already have. His hands haven't come along at the receiving position either. I also, gag, agree that having crowton as an OC didn't exactly help him "develop" into any of the positions he has tried. RS should be a slot/back receiver type guy. He's not an every down SEC caliber receiver. I like him & I wish him the best but I don't think he'll ever be the impact player most thought/hoped he would be out of high school. And nothing would make me happier than for him to prove me wrong!

Mettenberger doesn't have to be great. He just has to be better than what LSU has, and that won't take much. He is much better prepared than a QB out of high school. He's had a year at Georgia and a year at a premier junior college. And let's face it, at times last year it looked like Jefferson and Lee had never taken a snap in a real college game.

Plus, great quarterbacks are not needed to win national championships - just decent ones. LSU won national titles in 2003 and 2007 with average quarterbacks.

If he had come to LSU as just another 4* recruit he would be thought of as solid contributor as a freshman and sophomore. But coming in as a 5* recruit and the #1 ranked dual threat QB, in light of the poor QB play the past 2 seasons, it is safe to say that RS has been a disappointment in his first 2 years. That might not be the case if he had been given a legitimate shot to play QB or had limited touches at RB/WR.

When used correctly he was very good. But the coaching staff quit using his potential because it hurt Jeffersons feelings to have someone with talent stand behind center.
