the owners have allowed salaries to get too high

they've also tried to leech onto corporate sponsorship to support teams locally instead of fans, which affects attendance and the ability of the common fan to attend games

If the NBA dissolved today I would not even know it was gone.

Music during action. That what ruins it for me. I'm serious.

If the NBA weren't dying and people purchased tickets and filled the stadiums the salaries wouldn't be an issue. Do you think the owners did not calculate the economics on the salaries at all? They made an assumption of popularity of the sport, ticket and merchandise sales and then paid the players. They obviously miscalculated.

well i don't believe 17 franchises are losing money, to begin. creative accounting always shows up during lockout talks

but to "keep up with the joneses" teams have kept payin players more than they're worth

the first major lockout in the 90s dealt with this, then owners couldn't help themselves and kept on doin it (with "max" contracts)

This has always struck me as sort of a fool's bargain in the long run for professional sports franchises.

This news of NBA teams losing money has been out there for a while - it didn't just show up this year.

Are you saying that if teams were successful in selling out stadiums, boxes and selling merch that the contracts are so outrageous they'd still be losing money? Face it, the NBA is losing because of its fading popularity.

Get rid of the T-Wolves and the Raptors IMO.

Because it's fricking boring. Just my opinion, of course, but basketball on TV is terrible. I'm sure it's more fun live, but I have way better things to spend my money on.

Both teams have decent attendance given how horrible they are and have been for a while

If anyone gets contracted, I think it'll be Sacramento. Small market that can't draw is a bad combo

The 'Golden age' of basketball was the 90's. There just isn't the same interest - everything is compared to the players and the games back then. It just isn't the same for casual fans like me. I'll still watch 3/4 of a few Celtics games a year, but there just isn't the same interest. Also, it's fing expensive to get tix.

the combo of guarenteed contracts and a hard cap make this even worse. teams get stuck with those guys.

here is one reason

the knicks, who since 1946 have won 2 titles, the last in 1973, and who have only played for 2 since then, are the most valuable team in the league per Forbes

wins and losses dont seem to matter, its the advertising market potential

To many games and teams...Real basketball doesn't start until the playoffs.
