Did SMU going down and the breakup of the SWC help out LSU?

Seems like it's easier for us to recruit there now than maybe it used to be back when you had 8 major conference schools in that state.

Remember Jimmy Young and Rudy Harmon?
Both transferred to LSU from SMU. In the 87-88 season.

I believe the demise of the SWC helped LSU, but it's one of probably several factors. Don't know the exact number of top recruits we get out of TX now, versus the 80's, but it seems to be on the rise. To the extent the breakup of the SWC hurt A&M and increased LSU's ability to recruit better in A&M's back yard (Hou. and East TX), then yes the two are related. But I don't think we ever really recruited much against the others UH, Baylor, TCU, TT, etc. for top TX recruits; mainly the Ags and UT.

The Pony Excess piece on ESPN is pretty good. Hard to believe how corrupt things were then. Surely it still exists but one has to believe (or hope) the magnitude of the cheating is significantly less now.

A guy who played RB for Florida told me Mike Archer slipped him an envelope full of cash on the coffee table on his recruiting visit to his home. Still didn't get the guy.

It worked out anyway, the guy didn't do much.

If LSU keeps winning and becomes a 'sexy' team to play for (like Miami in 2000, 2001 or USC in 2004, 2005) we should have no problem recruiting.

If we fall back to mediocrity like 80s or 90s no good player from Texas is gonna head our way.

It doesn't get any sexier than 2 NCs in a decade
