Posted on another thread but here it is again:

"(Access to land) will be the end of hunting in this country. It will become a rich man's sport, like in Europe, but eventually so few people will hunt that it will lose public support.

It's the same story everywhere. Thirty years ago you could knock on a farmer's door and get permission to hunt (it's still that way in some places, but way out of the way). Most places it's been leased out to some deer or duck club, or some outfitter is bringing in out of state hunters so the few can profit from what should be a pastime for many.

I will never pay another guide or outfitter the rest of my life. They are stealing our heritage."

Duck clubs have pretty much leased up the South Platte from Denver to the Nebraska line. I had a buddy that leased some farmland up there for years. One season he brought a "friend" out to hunt with him. The next season the "friend" leased the place out from under him so he could outfit on it. With that revenue stream coming in, he can afford to pay more than the recreational hunter. When I was living in La. I called a club in Gueydan and they wanted $5,000 for a blind for a season! Other than a corporate tax write off and a few lawyers or doctors, I don't know many people that can swing that.

Personally, I drive WAY out onto the plains and then still hike in a pretty good ways to hunt some public areas that are still almost deserted. It costs me way more in time and gas to do this (which also cuts down on how often I get to do it) but at least I still get some enjoyment out of it, Eventually I will get too old to do all that crap, and it will just end.

That is another big part of it. Companies that hold a lot of land aren't leasing it because of liability reasons. Too scared they'll get sued. Sad state we're in.
Which sucks, because the law (Recreational use statutes, in La) strongly favors the owners of property. However, I suppose even if you are statutorily immune you still have to pay something to get out of the suit.

That would be a "cheap" blind now.

They don't really need that income stream with all the liability exposure and additional trouble on their end.
I can't see how the law could be any more favorable to them. It should (but doesn't) limit liability in theory, but in practice, I guess that can fail for many reasons.

But unmanaged property can be even more of a liability. At least with hunting clubs, the property is being managed, unlike if it was just open land sitting there...that's how it was when I was a kid and you'd always see where people had dumped trash everywhere; and you'd still have people going in there and doing God knows what...I always thought the hunting leases were mutually beneficial, but I guess the landowners have forgotten that.

You got cash, You hunt. I used to have a lease that was passed on to me by my father. When he was alive he was the only living witness to all the land disputes that was going on at the time. By favor he was promised to never loose the lease or pay more than 420$ a year. For trapping, Duck, and Deer hunting.
When he passed the lease was passed on to me. At 420$. Two yaers later it went up to 840$ a year, Two years after it went to 1700$, Then to 2600$ one year later. Then when they saw that they could not drive me out they took it from me. They came up with some BS excuse so they could give to someone with more money... Mr Tony Taylor and his buds from the bayou. And they saw that we still had a very good place to fish so they put a fience across the canal to keep fishers out too. You got cash. You hunt unless your A lucky one. But luck is running out.

even at $2600 per year, you're only paying $3.15/acre

that's not leasing, it's stealing, in today's market

It was only a 15 min boat ride from home too. Some times when I get off work in the mornig I can hear them shooting. I often wish they would shoot each other. Miss that place.

This is the seriously f'ed up part about all this. Landowners south of Houma tried that a few years back, too, to keep everyone out of "their" marsh. Up here in Colorado the rich, out-of-state (Texas) landowners string barbed-wire across creeks to keep rafters from scaring off "their" fish.

Everybody bitches about the government but if it wasn't for public land and waterways we'd all be screwed.

Yeah that is cheap. Our company lease in Golden Ranch was $5/acre for 3000 acres. You can get leases in decent price/acre ranges but they are usually huge tracks.

I am just hoping to buy into a decent club / lease partnership for a decent price when my boys get a few years older. Looking like I may have to give up riding in the mardi gras to do so

I've pretty much given up deer hunting because of lease prices. I still bow hunt a few of the local WMAs, but deer hunting just doesn't really do it for me anymore.

I much prefer going out West to the large tracts of public land/wilderness areas where you can actually get away from the roads and hunt in solitude. I can usually do a week hunt for around $500 too.

Until you get to your favorite canal/bayou and it has a gate across it, or you get ran out because "it's a private bayou."

Gotta love marsh fishing.

This is pretty depressing for someone that's young. All I wanted to do out of college was buy/lease some land with my buddies and duck hunt like it was our jobs before we all got married and had kids. It's looking like that might be too rich for our blood now.
