Overrated and overpriced in my opinion. Sides are horrible as well. The drop biscuits are decent though.

The one in Lafayette sure didn't hang around long. Maybe location, or the fact that its hard to wrap yourself aroun the Tamales and Steak combo as a specialty?

I never went to the one in Laffy (or any of the others)... I'm not a fan of Wolfs or anyone elses tamales!

I found it odd that they franchised out. The old dilapidated building in Greenville and its atmosphere is as much of a draw as the food. I can't imagine them thinking putting a Doe's in a different location would have the same effect. But I've been to the Doe's in Hot Springs and Fort Smith and they are both good. The steaks at the one in Fort Smith are some of the best I've ever had anywhere.

And the tamales are made from scratch, at least at the one in Greenville.

The newer sides on the menu looked good (mac and cheese and mashed sweet potatoes)

Still, I just don't get why this place doesn't have big wedge salads and baked potatoes. Would make the place even better.

Salad: Free, but not with eating
Tamales: Taste canned
Chili: Taste canned to most people
Green Beans: 100% canned
Boiled Potatoes: Boring as they sound
Fries: Good with a big steak
Mashed Sweet Potatoes: Good
Mac and Cheese: Looked good
Drop Biscuits: Heaven with honey

Steaks: For me, always cooked and seasoned perfectly. No complaints (have had sirloin, porterhouse, and filet)

This sums up my thoughts on the food

I worked at the one in Laffy. Same menu as the others but we tried to bang up the atmosphere and the sides (and salad and chili) didn't match the atmosphere.

Also, location was a burden. Most people passed Outback, Ruth's and Blue Dog to get to it... so, you really had to be wanting Doe's steak to get there.

Also, Our owner died... kind of put the restaurant on cruise control until it was bought out by Catahoula's.

This is from their website:

"Tamales - This is where it all began. We make our all beef tamales from Doe’s original recipe. Made the same way since 1941, they are a true taste of the Mississippi Delta. Served with a cup of our homemade chili. 1/2 dozen or dozen"

eta-I don't go to Doe's for the tamales, I go to eat damn near raw beef in mass quantities. Kinda like Fat Mama's in Natchez. I don't go there for their tamales, I go to get snockered on the margaritas.

They are not Mexican traditional tamales but rather how they are done up and down the delta. Greenville location has a warehouse where some folks make them all day, pack 'em, freeze 'em, and ship them to each location.
Once they are received they are cooked down in certain ingredients (boiled in a host of broth and spices) then.. the way Doe's has always done it topped it with Chili that is made in house with the scraps of all that aged beef.

Now if you want to know how to make those delicious "drop" biscuits.. ...
