Paraphrasing.. it doesn't matter who the QB is he's pretty much doomed to failure. He blames penalties, of course, for constantly being in long yardage situations instead of understanding that QB ineptitude on first and second is more often the reason and that we shouldn't be having so many third downs, period, of ANY length.

I'm thinking it explains all those passes short of the first down marker: Les has already conceded that he's not going to make it.

Excuse me if I think a Div I quarterback should be able to pick up 8 yards a good 40% of the time... at least. A good one will do much better.

I doubt that the national average on 3rd and 8 is 40%

It's probably a pretty low conversion rate. That being said, we need to run plays that give us a chance to pick it up. If it's not there then we need to trust that our QB will get rid of the ball and live to play another day. Punting isn't that bad when you have our punt team and defense.

what are the statistical differences in picking up 3rd and 8 vs. 3rd and 3?

As I watch ESPN and see all the other QB's out there, it really makes me realize how much trouble we are in...I'm not negative, I just see reality...If we can't move the ball against these stronger teams, Fla., Bama, Auburn, Ark., we will lose...Why? Defense will wear down after being on the field that long, it's that simple...this is not being negative, it is a fact...

What you are trying to say is beyond stupid. The man knows exactly what is going on. He watches it everyday. All he is doing is trying to make excuses so his quarterback does not end up on the lockeroom floor in the fetal position. Not saying it's right, but that is his mind set.

The entire approach to the offense is disturbing. The recalcitrant refusal to adapt is disturbing. The inability to get the ball to our playmakers on the edge is disturbing. Jefferson's utter lack of development is disturbing.

That's the message it's giving to the other team. We are conceding this drive. frick that attitude.

Anyone catch that he used the penalty on Lee's drive that LSU would have converted without to actually show support for playing JJ instead of Lee?

I guess he forgot to subtract that one when discussing the problems with JJ moving the offense.

Ohio St is converting on 3rd down 40% of the time, Arkansas 38% of the time, and LSU 41% of the time.

He's protecting his players. What do you want him to say. "Our QBs really suck. I mean they suck hard. I've never seen QBs that suck as bad as ours. They don't run the option well, they don't throw the ball well, I don't even like the way they hand the ball off. We're going to have to run to have any kind of success on offense."

I would rather run 10+ yard routes with 1 checkdown option on 3rd and 8 and have an incomplete pass trying to throw 10 yards down the field or ball thrown away out of bounds then pick up 4 yards on 3rd and 8 and gain that almighty 4 extra yards of field position for a defense that can carry us regardless

I don't think the QB is holding or starting "falsely". Now, if there's evidence JJ's fudging up the snap count, that's one thing, but, then wouldn't everybody be doing it including the center?

I'm not defending the anemic offensive production, the lackluster (generous description at best), but the play called is often a longer pass and the defense forces the QB to take the dump off. Sometimes the receiver makes a play and still gets the first. A play is not necessarily a good (or bad) play, based soley on success or failure to achieve a first down. The QB is not wrong to make the dump off, solely because it fails to get the first down. Progressions are progressions.

He might not have already conceded it, but he's so deathly afraid of letting a QB throw downfield, he's willing to give up the ball to avoid doing it. So, he throws short in hopes that a receiver can break a tackle and get the first, but realizing that he probably won't and we'll have yet another 3-and-out, which is far, far better than risking any of our QBs throwing a pass downfield.

Sad, isn't it?

If you ever needed an example of the delusionally unrealistic expectations of the "average" LSU fan, there it is.
