Just rewatched it and was even better the second time after having all the characters figured out.

I know one thing, the premier of The Sopranos, The Wire, and many other classics didn't generate this kind of buzz.

I was definitely blown away by the premier.

I enjoyed the hell out of it and I went in expecting to hate it.

I hate saying that the most recent thing is the greatest of all time but I honestly can't remember being so absolutely captivated by a premiere. It was just an awesome experience.

The Wire and Six Feet Under's premieres were about as good. Better than Sopranos, Deadwood, and BoB's premiers. If it ends up being the average of the quality of those shows, sign me up for a boner.

it was good, but the fat guy they shot in the head while listening to his music, what was his connection?

The Wire

to me that was one of the best premieres ever. If not one of the most intriguing opening scenes ever...

this is the correct answer. Best pilot episode in TV history, IMO.

As much as I loved Boardwalk Empire's pilot...it can't touch Lost's.

His name is Big Jim Calismo (sp?) or something like that, he's a Chicago Boss. Al Capone is one of his muscle guys and mentions that Big Jim doesn't want to get involved in alcohol and is sticking with running prostitutes. It looks like the young and ambitious guys in his crew got him out of the way so they can get involved in the liquor business.

LOST's was pretty incredible, as was Boardwalk Empire's. It and Boardwalk Empire's are actually pretty similar in the fact that both ABC and HBO spent a boat-load of money on those pilots and brought in two big names to direct that aren't really involved in the show after the pilot (well Scorsese can always do more if he'd like, I suppose).

Can we count Battlestar's opening miniseries in this debate? I know it's four hours, but even the first hour on its own was fantastic. I was hooked on that show more quickly than any other I think.

The Wire is my favorite show of all-time, but it's a slow build. Not sure the pilot would rank up there high for me. Same with Breaking Bad and Deadwood. I loved Mad Men's pilot. The entire ep was spectacular, and the reveal that Don was married at the end of the ep was fantastically done imo.

i have a prediction that this show will end up like "the hangover" on this board

don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it a lot, but it is getting way too much hype here and I'm not sure it can live up to it

with that said, I can't wait for this week's episode

I know I'm in the extreme minority but I hated Lost's pilot and it turned me off the whole show. I have seen one episode after the premiere.

I liked Boardwalk Empire's premiere a lot but my all time favorite was 24 because of it's timing release after 9/11. Best premiere ever.

The Shield's premiere or if you count BSG's 33 for the show's premiere should also be in this discussion. Personally, I would rank those two and Lost's as the best I have seen.

Lost was great, but the potential of Boardwalk Empire is just amazing. I would take Scorsese over JJ Abrams any day.

I too was thinking I wanted to watch it again just to learn the names. They throw a ton of characters at you. But awesome show!
