Saturday will be the first time I have ever eaten there. What should I have and what are the crowds like?

Lines are always long. Awful food is surpassed only by worse service. Too many better options. Tourist trap crap. If held hostage get the Ferdi I guess.

Lines are long and the food is overpriced...with that said, the ferdi/ralph is fantastic.

Bring a drink for the line. Johnny's poboys are better.

The food snobs on this board would have you think Mother's is serving McDonald's quality food while you're being waited on by the Gestapo.

Will there be a thirty minute line...probably. It's touristy because it's so famous.
Is it over priced for what you get...it is for what you get compared to other places, but a lot of places are over priced in that area of the city.
Is the food good...it's not bad, but yes, there are better places to go in the city.

If you wanna go to get the experience, and say you've been...get the Ferdi, but there are better options as far as dining in N.O.

This is the correct answer.

Agree. It is pretty good grub. I am not standing in line for it, but you can't honestly say the food is bad.

Thanks for the info. This place is so hyped I wasn't sure what the actual opinion about this place was.

No doubt. The Ferdi/Ralph and the debris po-boy are good. The best time to eat there is breakfast. The debris or ham biscuit is really good. Is it over priced? Of course it is.

The Bon Ton around the corner is my go to spot around Mothers but everyone should go to Mothers once I guess. I liked the soft shell crab po-boy with debris on it!!!

Agreed here.

While the place is not really worth waiting in any sort of sizable line, I'd put the quality of the product they put out up against any other place in town. Not many places both bake their own hams and roast their own roast beef.

People ripping them for "quality" don't know what they're talking about.

Where are said food snobs? Seems like agreement amongst NOLA people that it is overpriced, but still good.

We, as locals, recognize that there are better poboys for half the price elsewhere, but I wouldn't blame a tourist for going.

I even make it once a year during slow summer months (forgot to this year).

Hell, even there, I'd say it's only marginally "overpriced." It's not like their prices are completely out of whack for any other similarly situated place.

Agreed...but Johnny's is cheaper though

Mother's=Carnegie Deli

Overpriced, but high quality and good...a must go at least once.

Eventually, you discover Johnny's (or Guy's, Parkway, etc.) or Katz's Deli (or other ones up and down Orchard St.)

I suspect the people who bash Mother's are locals with a lackluster knwledge of the NOLA restaurant scene or frequent visitors to NOLA from nearby who feel the need to berate Mother's so they can feel local.

Me being one of those "tourists", I have to try it at least once. I looked up the menu and the Ferdi has me hooked. Anything with an ingredient called debris has to be special.

Def go for it.

I'm not a huge red jambalaya fan, but their version is good.

They also have one of the best restaurant versions of red beans. I think their house baked ham has something to do with it.
