Why is Ar-kansas getting all this respect?

Lets look at the last four year rivals recruiting rankings:
Alabama 2010(5), 2009(1), 2008(1), 2007(10)
LSU 2010(6), 2009(2), 2008(11), 2007(4)
Florida 2010(2),2009(11),2008(3), 2007(1)
Arkansas 2010(49),2009(16),2008(36), 2007(31)
Our classes have been just as good as Alabama & Florida. True our player development has been appalling with heavy attrition especially at key places (line, QB etc) but Arkansas never had the talent to challenge Bama and Florida?
We still have a fair bit of talent. Why not us...
It will take more than a Mallet to go after $aban.

So we can ridicule them for failing to perform up to expectations.

Mallet is the reason. combination of him and a offensive guru for a head coach.
They can't keep people from scoring though.

I could rant forever about the importance of the QB position...or just direct you to LSU's results over the past 2 years (in comparison to the previous 7) where it was clearly our biggest weakness.

Cause ESPN, CFN, CBSsports and Fox Sports all hate LSU and think Miles isn't a good coach.

Mallet and Patrino....thats it....

Mallet, and his ability to feel 0 pain on the field from hitting that crystal meth all day.

College and NFL game is won at the QB more often than most. They have a good one.

True but their secondary was absolutely atrocious last year
Posted on 8/27/10 at 11:15 am to mike4lsu
Because they have a coach who has a great offensive system with a good QB. If they have an even remotely decent defense they will be in contention for the West

I think Arkansas has a fair chance to beat Alabama for one very good reason: it's early in the season.
Bama is replacing 9 starters on defense. The Tide's secondary will not be playing as well early on as it will later in the season barring injury. That should mean that the Hogs will put up some good numbers on Bama.
On the flipside, Arkansas won't be able to stop Bama's run game, so it may well be one of those high-scoring, last team with the ball wins kind of games.
As for your point, I agree, though, that over the length of the season depth may play a part in Arkansas' demise. The Hogs' defense will cost them at least a couple of games unless, by some miracle, Petrino suddenly discovers that defense matters.

If you haven't noticed by now...people are fascinated with offense...fans, media, negatigers.
They would rather see a 35-24 win than a 14-3 win.
And one thing that Arkansas definitely will have is an offense...they might not ever see the field because of a terrible defense, but they have an offense.
I do think that Arkansas will be a contender and they're going to beat someone they shouldn't have ...and lose to someone they shouldn't have.

Arkansas went 8-5 last year with the possibly the best QB in the land while Bama went 14-0 and a national championship with a QB who knew how to manage the game okay. NFL might be won at the QB position but in college its still all about the defense.

If Petrino wants to compete for SEC titles, he will eventually understand that he needs a defense. He can't get away with just a high scoring offense like he could a Louisville.

I agree. I think we beat them.

This is what I have been saying. Even though our offense was horrible last year, defense was still loose.

Bama will control the clock making Mallet be on the sidelines a lot. Arkansas might win this one but I don't see them putting up 30+ on Bama without some turn overs and that D doesn't translate to take aways all that well.

Ole Miss supposedlly was going to be National Champions last year on the back of their "great" QB and "brilliant" coach. How did that work out when their 50th ranked recruiting class hit the field?
