Spoiler:

He mentions everything being burned repeatedly in the movie and ash is falling the whole time. I don't think they see an animal or insect throughout the entire book. At the end of the book the guy who takes him asks him if the man was his father and he says yes. He also calls him papa repeatedly in the book.

There is one sentence about 3/4s the way through the book where the father refers to him as his soon. It would take me ages to find it but I remember it sticking out because I was wondering the whole thing throughout the book.

I also like that it isn't explained how the world got that way. Finally, the wife is in a few flashbacks in the book. She's in the movie more but not too much. I was worried they would add in her character somehow and go off on a tangent from the book but her scenes were done extremely well.

Read the book, have no intention of seeing the movie. I can't tolerate kids in peril.

And it was obvious that "the boy" was his son from the book.

I didn't finish it... YET

Although I found myself having to push through it... it wasn't that it was not captivating... Simply that I went back and forth morally and questioned my own desire to be able to overcome something like that! I wanted to say the wife was weak but actually kept sympathizing with her.

I have never gone through those type of intense emotions as a result of watch ing movie!

Yea, I'd recommend it Freaux. If anything, just watch it to see how much a film can affect your emotions. It really is quite fascinating imo.

I think Cormac McCarthy came out and said they were father and son because if they weren't, the story wouldn't be nearly as powerful.

In his recent rare interview he said the book was inspired by him having a son at an old age (70+ I think). He knows he may not be around when his son matures and worries about that and how to be sure his son does well.

As to the reason for the fall of civilization - that is left vague on purpose. The book does mention flashes of light in the distance and the father fills the bathtub to be used as protection from heat. A nuclear exchange is possible but radiation is never a concern that is mentioned so I tend to think something like a massive meteor strike is more likely (especially with all the dust). It really doesn't matter though.

Good not great, although I admit, it was a tough movie to pull off. Definately no Road Warrior!

Spolier...........

Anyone else think the kid was the 2nd coming of Christ? One of my golfing buddies suggested that, and I'm starting to lean that way myself.

bet you were captivated when you did finish it!

This movie has rattled my chain more than any movie I have ever watched. It is something any good father will almost hurt watching at the end....I cried like a baby. couldn't wait to hug/kiss my little ones this morning.....even went to work late.

frick that movie

I guess I may have to watch this due to all the positive reviews. Of course you all liked the book, and I really didn't care for it at all so maybe I shouldn't see it after all

No shite. And the only other film I've seen by that director was a polar opposite. A sweet, humorous film about old Swedish hippies (Together?)

As I've said earlier.... What a stinker.

Sticking a fork in my eye would have been less painful and given the cannibals a head start, too. Sorry if that didn't make much sense but I'm taking a cue from the movie.

****SPOILER ALERT****

Get into harm's way, get down low to hide from the cannibals, run.... did they show the same scene five times in the movie? Sure seemed like it.

Encounter a poor hungry lonely desperate man on the road... act uncaring, let the boy be a voice of pity... how many times was THAT one shown?

Have the guys cry a few times and we've got ourselves a "poignant" story of survival. But, hey, let's see... you abandon a cushy bomb shelter for a silly reason so I'm not sure survival was the name of the game.

Wasn't it a bit cold? I think the guys jumped into the waterfall pool just so we can get a glimpse of the father's scrawny arse.

I should have walked off when mother did.

Methinks Rex doesn't fall into the good father category.....

Reading your comments makes me come to ths conclusion that you are not nearly as cerebral as you like people to think you are.

The book is a master piece and the director did a fabulous job of staying true to the book.

I've always reserved jumping to judgement on you as it seems most people on here don't care for you. BUT, even though it was your opinion, you were able to weave it into a jab whether that was the objective or not.

Glad I'm not the cold fricker you are.

most depressing movie ever. I just sat there after it was over and watched the credits roll. Not able to move.

I watched it and Requiem for a Dream in the same night.
