Here’s the email I received with the subject line ... humiliating experience:

“I had the most humiliating experience the other night. My friend and I were told to "vacate our table!" We went to Jonathan's the Rub, having been there before and enjoyed the food. We were celebrating our mutual birthdays. We arrived at 6:30 p.m. and were seated at the only table for 2 available which was next to the front door. Oblivious to the crowd around us, we brought a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine to enjoy as we ate our food and talked. We shared a dessert and were suddenly told to leave by Jonathan. He stood about 15 feet away and announced this to not only us, but the rest of the diners around us. All this before receiving our bill! Apparently the wait staff felt that we were not moving out fast enough and Jonathon decided to make a point. We were out the door by 7:50 p.m.” Signed Cathie Petak and Maryellen McGlothlin

Let me start by saying Levine sounded like a pretty good guy on the phone. And, as he tells the story, it sounds like he was between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The tiny restaurant was “slammed” with customers and many people were waiting, including a large party that would require that one particular table. The ladies had finished their meals, paid their check and were -- in their words and Levine’s -- “oblivious” to the rest of the dining room. The ladies’ stay, Levine counters, was two hours and forty minutes and that’s when, at the request of the staff, he stepped in.

I dunno about this one. I’m all for leisurely celebrations of family and friends over a meal, but I’m also keenly aware that when restaurants are super busy that it’s not the time to linger. Besides, who wants to have a bunch of hungry people staring longingly at your table?

when a restaurant is packed as hell and other people are waiting for a table and you have already finished and paid for everything you are going to pay for, you need to GTFO. If the restaurant is not busy, its another story and they probably wouldn't mind.

Well, if they stayed from 6:30 to 7:50 like they stated and the bill wasn't presented to them I vote for the customers.

If they stayed for 2 hours and 40 minutes and lingered after paying the bill I'm with the chef.

And 2 bottles of wine. I think the way it was done was tacky and classless, but I don't have a problem with them being asked to leave. Chef's have to make money. They do that by flipping tables as quickly as they can. If the table is still ordering food, they won't be asked to leave. Eat ya food, and get to stepping.

I find that usually in these situations the truth is somewhere in the middle. I will split the difference and assume that two hours had passed and perhaps the check was presented but not paid. If this is true plus people waiting the fact that these TWO people BROUGHT IN TWO bottles of wine with them, then this equals time to GTFO.

Maybe not be rude about it but i'm just sayin'

As being a former restaurant owner, I can certainly see why you would want to trun tables, that's obvious. On the other hand, I would never have approached a table to leave, no matter what the circumstances. the customer is always right. Word of mouth travels a lot faster in the restaurant biz than you think. Being a customer at a restaurant, I can assure you I would be offended if I was asked to leave. In the few times I have felt we stayed too long at a table I would surely make up for it in the tip to the wait staff.

Great thread. One of my pet peeves is when at a restaurant people want to sit around and talk after we have already finished eating and paid the bill. It just annoys me, I wanna scream at the table... "We're done here, let's go!"

A-hole chef or A-hole customers

It depends on who's facts are right. 1 hour and 20 minutes = overreaction by restaurant. 2 hours and 40 minutes = a-hole customers that needed to shoot the shite somewhere less busy.

One of my favorite things at an upscale restaurant in BR was watching the owner come up to a table of 2 that were sitting next to us and ask them to leave. We had overheard some of the conversation between the server and customer for the last hour or so, and the server tried to be accommadating, but the guy was just a prick. The customer returned his app said it was cold, returned his steak because it wasn't cooked right, and returned the wine and said it was corked. The owner walked up to the customer and said, "you don't like my food, you don't like my wine, you don't like the service, then I would rather you not come back. Your check is taken care of. Please leave". I appreciate that attitude from a business owner being confindent in his product. Respect is given both ways. The place has a good enough reputation to sustain w/o one a-hole and however many people he tells. I'll just say that "mama" came out and backed her son up for the discussion. The section applauded them when the customer left because they heard it all as well. A prick is a prick and deserves to be treated as such no matter the situation. Take your money somewhere else.

Like others said, the owner could have handled it better.

This thread makes me kinda feel bad, my group and I post up and booze for hours when we haven't seen each other in a while.

Sounds like they stayed around too long, but if seating is an issue than the restaurant should expand.

The chef is the a-hole here, simply because he was flippant about it. He could have said "okay ladies, I'm sorry to have to do this, but do you mind taking your wine outside because there are other people who have been waiting for a while."

It would have been a non-issue.

The restaurant and all those waiting for to enjoy themselves while others cadillac their asses along like they're the only people on the planet.
