Oil Spill rumor, myth or fact?

Is it true that there hasn't been enough oil spilled in the gulf to fill up the super dome? Someone told me that recently and I find it hard to believe. Seems like much more than that to me...Does anyone know if this is true? Heard the same thing?
PS: I'm assuming you have to know the air volume of the superdome to begin justifying this and I can't find that number...

I tend to believe that. The Superdome is 680 x 273 ft. A cylinder of those dimensions would hold 742 million gallons. Of course the Superdome is not really a cylinder and there is stuff inside that fills up a lot of that volume (seats, luxury boxes, Tom Benson) but that's a reasonable 1st order approximation. The total oil spilled up to this point is something like 150 million gallons. So it's not even close.

I heard that it would fill the first 3 floors of the Empire State Building. The media is amazing isn't it.

So, the oil spill is just like a turd in the swimming pool?

Yep. People will believe anything and never even check the math. Most people don't even know how to do the math. Volume is a bitch.

The amazing fact to me is that the Mississippi pours as much water into the gulf in 38 SECONDS that the bp spill has poured oil into the gulf in 70 plus days ...

Yeah, but its WATER that mixes with the other water. It isn't OIL that doesn't mix with water and ruins everything that it touches.
Apparently it is making a huge mess and is killing a lot of stuff, so it is a problem.

Maybe more like a turd in a really large punch bowl.

Are you kidding?!?!?
It's the same as a 6" turd in an 100,000 acre 100' deep punchbowl

That turd sure does have a pretty significant impact

a lot of "nothing to see here" b.s. in this thread.

So what if it doesn't fill up th superdome. Are you saying that it isn't actually a big spill and it isn't ruining our coast? Quite a bit more oil has been leaked than reported, so no telling exactly how much has actually been spilt.
No, not saying that at all just that the Superdome is a lot bigger than I thought it was.

Also, for those that think the media is blowing the spill out or proportion, not true, if it wasn't for the media, no one would even know about the spill because BP would have covered it up. (They're still trying to do just that)

Even if it is like a turd in a really big punch bowl I still wouldn't want to drink the punch.
Just saying, just because it isn't (comparatively) a lot doesn't mean it it doesn't frick up the gulf.

Really? I read it as a lot of "the media is way overblowing it" in this thread.
Is it serious? Yes.
But IMO, the bigger damages will come from the media saturating the country with the "horrors" and inept government response than the actual spill.
Again, IMO, I think that come next year, the fishing supply catch would be back to normal or near normal levels. The only real reminder is the fact that you'll see the occasional tarball wash up somewhere.

Yep, because we all know the government is adequately defending the Gulf states.

1. yes, its true that the Super Dome is really big.
2. not relevant. intended to make it appear that the BP/Halliburton spill is trivial. tell that to the pelicans and turtles.
