I think the big difference is SITC is focused on the relationships the woman have while Entourage is focused on the careers of the characters. The love lifes are more of a sideshow in Entourage.

I sort of agree with you here. there's a good christopher hitchens video explaining that from an evolutionary standpoint, women never had to be funny. it was a function for men to get pussy, essentially. "make a woman laugh, you can make her do anything."

maybe the fact that women carved out a successful franchise of romance/comedy on a brand of humor that wasn't based on crude objectification, vulgarities, generally cynical/pessimistic observations on life, but most especially, an overwhelming abundance of irony -- all things that I think we can all agree teeter toward the "masculine" view of life. whereas the relatively new media landscape of comedies aimed at women (SITC, Glee!, etc.) have a more sincere brand of comedy that's geared more toward making light of emotions and character relations, mostly free of irony or crude sexuality and world weariness.

while i love that quote, it's not reality. if it were true i would've gotten more arse than a toilet seat in my formative years.

it's just statistics. not saying all men are funnier than all women but c'mon....pick your top 20 comedians, how many women are in the bunch?

i could take or leave sitc i didn't hate it at all. and i thought parts of it were enjoyable and/or funny.

but people have been making this comparison since day one largely based on the number of main characters in both shows and what network the show airs on.

it's like saying every sitcom with a mom, dad, and two kids is the same. the argument is an easy one to make.

not that the OP isn't right, i would just say that a male sitc would be funnier than a female sitc if the shows were indeed similar.

i can't give an honest comparison on the entire run of the two shows because i've only seen random epi's of sitc whereas i've seen all of entourage but entourage is getting lazy as of late and i still find it funnier than sitc.

Have you watched Glee? The humor of that show is pretty much "crude objectification, vulgarities, generally cynical/pessimistic observations on life, but most especially, an overwhelming abundance of irony." I am not saying that the show isn't aimed at woman just that it is the fact that it is a musical and a light soap makes it a appealing to women not that it adheres to some "more sincere brand of comedy."

hmm, the 2 or 3 episodes i've seen were extremely light hearted high school comedies with spontaneous moments of song. maybe i missed the ones that were more typical of what i was criticizing.

does it show a deep seated insecurity in men who display this double standard?

Why should guys be interested in a show that isn't targeted at them?

do these men fear women who have sexual and monetary free will?

No, they fear horse faced women wearing ridiculous looking clothes.

does anyone hate both shows?

I'm sure lots of people think both shows are shallow and stupid.

FWIW I think both shows are funny even though I'm only an occasional viewer of each.

as the best example of a show about male escapist fantasy compared to it's exact mirror image in SitC

I agree with your basic premise that its essentially the same show, but I disagree that its a double standard or hypocritcial for men to like Entourage and not Sex in the City. There could be a quality difference, for example, I rank Goodfellas as a top 5-10 movie, but think Casino is mediocre at best, they are not only the same movie, but the same people..

FWIW, I thought SITC was very funny and sexy the first few seasons, the movies do not interest me. Entourage I thought was damn funny its first couple years, it was wanning the last season I saw (after they made the Escobar movie and fired Ari for a bit), I haven't seen it since.

If you dont like Entourage and think its funny then youre 1 of 3 things.

1. Female
2. A person with no sense of humor
3. GAY GAY GAY

two diferent shows you idiot!

sex in the city is more of an emotional show for people with vaginas

entourage is the greatest show to watch with your boys and drink a beer. enough said!!!

Hotter naked girls on entourage, Ari Gold > than any Sex and the City character. Entourage not even close to Sex and the City.

Some of you should read this thread from a few months ago: LINK

A nice expert that contrasts the 2 series written by Tigerwerm:

quote:

Entourage is about a HOLLYWOOD STAR who is in the prime of his life, living the dream with his buddies. Essentially, Vincent Chase behaves the way you would expect of a 20-something that has good looks, tons of money, and free time. It's a fantasy, and never tries to pretend that it isn't.

The women on Sex & the City try to present this insanely fricked up little world that they live in as a "normal life" for someone in their age group/level of attractiveness/social status. And that is why it is highly irritating to every straight man I've ever met.

I sort of agree here actually. For their respective audiences, these shows are pretty much the same thing, about men/women leaving sort of a dream life, with only minor speed bumps along the way.

so you don't think that there are single, rich socialite women living in Manhattan? hmm...sounds like bias on werm and your part for agreeing.

eta: I'd also love to hear how their world is so "insanely fricked up"

yeah I didn't set my premise up well enough. I don't mean to say that if you like one you must like the other. I am just saying that there is a very vocal contingent of people that hate SITC, whereas Entourage is the mirror that goes relatively unpunished.
