I feel like I'm the only amateur player who doesn't cheat. Please tell me that there is someone else out there who plays honest golf so I won't feel so alone.

The setting...I'm talking to a female acquaintance who is an avid golfer. She plays courses from Texas to Florida with her husband.

I say, "Ya know, I can't find a partner who doesn't cheat. They all give themselves mulligans, foot wedges and gimme putts from 5 feet away."

Her: "That's the way I play."

Me: "But it's cheating."

Her: "Who cares. We're not pros. What difference does it make?"

Me: "The difference is that if I shoot a 90 it's a frickin 90. If you shoot a 90 it might be a real 105."

She: "Well, I'll never play golf with you."

And she stormed out in a huff.

So, what rules do you guys play by?

I play by the rules. I've seen too many people miss 1 footers to be giving people anything!

when I was first starting I would have a "happy squirrel" knock my ball away from trees and stuff like that

Now I play it straight up, just in case I have a great round I want it to be legit.

I play straight up that way when I beat my personal best I can be real with myself and other people.

You're only cheating yourself if you don't use a little foot wedge every now and then.

I used to use a foot wedge and take mulligans, but after that first year of playing I stayed within the rules. I've played rounds with people and we both came out with an 88 and I had hit several "tough" putts, while they were busy burning worms. I just play my game and take other peoples' score with a grain of salt.

In a friendly game we will all play in the leather but straight up on everything else. Ive had two tournys so far this year and one more to go so Ive been putting everything out. It keeps me more focused that way anyways.

I play absolutely NO CHEATING with 1 mulligan per back/front 9. If the putt is 6 inches away, I still have to putt it

I don't use foot wedges or take mulligans (except off the 1st tee when I don't have time to warm up on the range). But I don't hole out every 1 footer either. I'd never take a 5 foot gimme though.

I actually had a friend get pissed at me once when he hit a wedge to 2 feet, and I told him that I don't give birdie putts. He missed it and didn't talk to me for a hole.

That's cheating.

Honestly though, I don't see what the big deal is if you're not playing for money. I've played with people before who cheat like crazy, but I didn't have any money on the round, so I didn't care.

I think a lot of golfers give many of the short putts to speed up the pace of play. If you are in a 5-some, or a 4-some and everybody is griding over 2 and 3 footers, that can add an extra 20 minutes to your round.

Cheating in the sense of moving your ball, sitting it up for a better lie, gimme putts. I don't consider it cheating if the group clearly states before the outing that there will be 1 mulligan allowed per 9

Until this year, I played most every weekend. We never warm up on the range so we play 2 off the first tee.

From there, I play it down, including behind trees, in divots, in the rough, etc. I putt everything in. The people I play with all use many foot wedges and several mulligans per round. The folks I play with will give 5-6 foot putts to each other on a routine basis.

Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't. For me, golf means playing by the rules. However, I will admit two off the first tee is not by the rules.

If you cheat, you'll never know what kind of player you actually are or what you can become. What's the point of that?

Agreed, golf is the type of game where if you cheat you are just cheating yourself

I don't cheat, but most of the guys I work with/play with do. Oh and btw

That's cheating. If everyone in the group agreed to play the ball up in the summer in perfect conditions that's cheating too.

Especially if you cheat in rounds you apply towards your handicap. Then when you have to play it down in a tournament, you won't get all of the strokes you should be getting because your handicap will be less than it should.

Cheating is cheating, but I'd rather see someone play it up in the fairway or take an 18 inch gimme than take mulligan. What if you're playing well, and you don't need any of those mulligans that the rest of your group allows? You'd be penalized.

About the only thing I'll do when I'm playing is move the ball out of divots or off of roots if not in competition. Stupid to damage my club when I'm just out there for fun.
